From Los Angeles California: Looking for the most bioavailable and safe Calcium/complex to take daily. I am 82 and just diagnosed with Osteoporosis in my hips. T- score on DXA -2.6 . Based on my research I ordered Kalsio+ from NZ. The label is complex & it seems the yield is too low. I will try to get a TBS test but will definitely not consider injections, nor pills at this stage of my life.

Your suggestions and input is much appreciated.

I have been taking New Chapter Bone Strength for years. I take it with food and it is a relatively easy pill to swallow, which is an issue for me.

Calcium Citrate is considered to be very easily absorbed.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think this calcium is from red algae . It has all the good components but for the strontium. Not everyone can tolerate it & it alters the DXA test score. I will definitely try it if my MD approves it. Much appreciate your reply.

Have you seen any improvement with your bones using NEW CHAPTER or at least stopped the advancement of the osteoporosis?

I really can’t say. I have been taking it for years and in that time my spine has gotten slightly worse and my hips have gone from osteoporosis to osteopenia. My doctor thinks the last DEXA measure of my spine was inaccurate, so that is a mystery. Bloodwork shows my calcium level is just right. Calcium and other supplements are just one piece of dealing with bone issues - exercise, I believe is also very important.

You can improve absorption of calcium. Don't take it with other mineral supplements (like iron or magnesium - a little in a bone strength concoction is fine) as calcium will interfere with the absorption of those other necessary micronutrients. Also don't take too much in a single dose, likely between 300-500 mg in a dose, taken two or three times a day with meal or snack is better than 900 all at once. For optimum absorption you should include Vitamins D3 and K2 (not K1).

Have a look at my story for some other ideas. By the way, your T-score of -2.6 is only just into the rather arbitrarily decided osteoporosis line. If you have had no "fragility" fractures you're definitely in a good place to use natural means to maintain and even improve your t-score.

Thanks for the wealth of info and your amazing story Heron. Unfortunately the US healthcare is driven by Big Pharma. The doctors are pushing for drugs & medical intervention. The guidelines for HP, Cholesterol & Osteoperosis among others keep changing. We know why! In addition the supplements/vitamins are not regulated by the FDA so there is lots of misinformation & cheating going on. I did a lot of research to educate myself but finding the right formula is a challenge. Before I joined this site I looked into Kalsio+ from NZ and BLY Calcium L-Aspartate-Chelate from Canada. What throws me off is the amount for the elemental Calcium. I can't figure out the dosage.

So nice of you to give me encouragement. I hope the fires are somewhat under control and the air quality will soon improve.
