Hi, I was recently prescribed calcium carbonate after a slightly low bone densitometry test. But this supplement gave me quite severe stomach cramps and bloating. What is the best calcium supplement which will not, or is less likely to, induce gastrointestinal problems please?
I have now been prescribed calcium gluconate but have not taken any yet as there is saccharin in the ingredients and I know that artificial sweeteners upset my stomach.
Really appreciate any advice.

I felt really terrible when my GP prescribed calcium and vitamin D. That was calcium carbonate and Ive since learnt that a lot of people don’t get on with it. The GP changed me onto a effervescent calcium/vitamin D combo but although it tasted quite pleasant it was calcium carbonate too. I spoke to my fracture liaison nurse and we decided I was getting enough through dietary sources (too much calcium isn’t good for you either) but I decided to order some calcium citrate and I take 300 mg of that a day as a boost. I’ve been fine with the calcium citrate.
I take vitamin D on its own, anything between 1000 and 3000iu depending on the blood tests I do regularly.
