Good Morning, I have a history of Gerd and gastritis. I have been well controlled with protonix. Recently got the Covid vaccine and everything went crazy in my stomach. First it was bloating , gas , diarrhea and stomach pain. Then my Gerd returned with pain radiating to my back shoulder blade . Dr. Told me to double up on the protonix and use gaviscon in between as needed. It has helped some but still with a lot of reflux. So the Dr. now ordered Dexilant . Has anyone had positive results with Dexilant ? Or if not what was your experiences with Dexilant. I am hesitant to start a new medication so any input would be greatly appreciated.
Dexilant for Gerd: Good Morning, I have... - Acid Reflux Support
Dexilant for Gerd
if your current one is not working maybe this is the reason to move onto the new one? It takes a month for your system to get used to it. I don’t know about either brands. However from what I’ve read both the medications are only used for short term - 8 weeks.
I was on Dexilant for a while when my Protonix stopped working. I have Gerd and the acid reflux was so bad for so long. When I was put on Dexilant, my acid reflux felt somewhat better in a day or so, and a lot better in about a week. About a month later, I was pretty well back to normal, and was put back on Protonix and it continues to work. I still have to be careful what I eat and how I eat to keep it under control. Hope you feel better soon.
Thank you so much for the information. Did you take the Dexilant before a meal ? I haven’t started taking it , I was waiting for when I get a few days off to try Incase I get side effects .
I took it in the morning, and it worked all day long for me. Hopefully you don't get side effects or not to bad. Praying it works for you.
I'm uk what is Dexilant please as I'm burning all up back all down all inside back. Oesophagitis bile gastritis hernia 6 years. Ppis not working and Gaviscon burns in back.
Sorry you are having so much trouble. Dexilant ( Dexlansoprazole) is a newer PPI for GERD and other issues. I also take Carafate which helps with coating stomach if you have bile gastritis. What helps me is taking the PPI 30 min or an hour before eating , then eat and then if you start to feel burning again I take gaviscon tablets in between. Also watch diet, no coffee, citrus, spicy , fried foods.
Oh we have Lansoprazole here ...without the d in front. I will try ask for to try sulcrafate which is UK for your Carafat. He added an h2 blocker. If its burning and all inflamed in my back hours I take the h2 blocker at 8...still burns then Gaviscon...still inflamed for hours and go to bed in pain. I can taste everything I've eaten.
I def cant eat fat!! I avoid citrus caffeine spices. But a biscuit grapes honey yogurt berries croissant dried fruit cheese pizza cake is a no bo too.
When do you take the carafate? How often and do you take dexi same time as carafate? Thankyou. It can burn tiny bit to the left of shoulder blades. I have no gallbladder. Thankyou for help
Hi , normally I have taken H2 blockers before bedtime . They work better through the night . Carafate you should take it 1 hour before meals . If you have to take medicines there has to be a 2 hour window before and after. Dexilant is once a day. Since I take medications I start out taking Dexilant then wait 30 min. Then I eat breakfast .Then I take my meds . If I get any heartburn in between breakfast and lunch I will take gaviscon. . 1 hour before lunch I take Carafate. Then lunch . Again any issues I take gaviscon again . Then 1 hour before dinner I take Carafate again . Then eat . Then before bed I take Carafate again . Your dr will tell you how many times a day to take the Carafate . It’s gets a little tricky when meds are involved . It takes time to figure out what works for you. The trick also if you take a PPI you need to take it at least 30 min to an hour before the first meal like breakfast . Hope you can figure out what works for you.
Thankyou for explaining so well !! Appreciated fingers crossed 👍
Your welcome !! Hope you get some relief . Be patient it takes time to figure out what works for you. It’s a trial and error thing .
Very good advice from Jances, I was pretty much doing the medications the same way. It can help the sleep with some extra pillows under your head, sleep propped up. I even took to sleeping in a recliner, so was somewhat upright, keeping for anything going back up in my esophagus. Don't lie down right after eating and after taking medicine, so it has time to move out of the esophagus and not cause damage. Prayers you get better soon. God bless ❤️🙏❤️
I did take Dexilant and it helped with acid reflux, then I was able to get off of it and back on protonix. I took it early morning way before I took any other meds and had no interaction.
