I was diagnosed with silent reflux a year or so ago and for long periods I don’t have any issues: I think probably because of the lansprazole and fexofenadine I take, although I’ve no idea why I was prescribed the latter. My biggest issue is that more and more I get a persistent cough that is exacerbated by eating some things (chocolate a big culprit) and dusty environments (like my woodworking space. How can I combat this cough?
Persistent Cough: I was diagnosed with... - Acid Reflux Support
Persistent Cough
Avoid the triggers. The cough is caused by acid. It can damage your lungs. It did mine. Read Dr.Louise Kaufman's Acid Reflux Diet. She's an expert.
I had a persistent cough with my LPR and diet is very important and followed a strict low acid diet for about six months and slowly introduced some foods I avoided. I always eat early in the evening and no snacking before bedtime. My cough lasted about four months and I have tried to reduce the medication now but I feel that I must keep going with it for now. I avoid all chocolate and don’t crave it like I used to. Good luck with your journey
Fexofenadine is prescribed to combat allergic reactions. I would ask the doctor why you are taking this and if it can be discontinued.
Wear a mask in your dusty space. Switch to decaf tea and coffee. The caffeine in both and also chocolate causes the sphincter between the stomach and oesophagus to relax allowing the acid and vapour to irritate the back of your throat causing the cough and damaging your oesophagus in the way. Also cut back on trigger foods like citrus, tomatoes and chillies. Greasy foods aren’t great either. Start a journal writing down when your coughing is bad each day and try and link it to what and when you’re eating. Gaviscon advance works well taken after meals and before bed
Best practice is to change your diet, keep your work surfaces and elsewhere free of dust. I’ve recently stopped drinking fluids, mostly water after dinner, and just had the best nights sleep. Plus didn’t have to get up for the toilet. Also not drinking alcohol. I’d rather help myself than go back on lansoprazole as from many reviews PPIs don’t do your body any good.
