Need help with heartburn

My Omeprazole was working great before I had a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) (mini stokes in the brain). Since March 2023 I’ve extremely bad heartburn. I’ve been on Omeprazole for a few years and it was perfect until my tia. I have tried Esomeprazole, that didn’t work, Rabeprazole and Ranitidine it’s not working, now I’m on Pantoprazole with ranitidine and it very minimal help. Any suggestions?

I found Dexilant to work when other PPI's did not.

How depressing and frustrating for you.

Omeprazole stopped working for me after a while too. I've stopped using it and now I rely on mainly on Gaviscon and I changed my diet. I've cut out acidy food and drinks as much as possible. I have occasional flare ups and then I take an Omeprazole or two if it gets bad. I think it becomes ineffective with overuse. My doc said it was ok to use Omeprazole like that. Sorry I can't offer any more help. Hope you find a solution.

oh no, sorry to hear, I’m a diabetic so although I can’t use gaviscon I use it in critical situations.

Have you tried Gaviscon after meals?

I have been using baking soda and water. Helps with gas big time. But it’s not helping all of the heartburn

Have you tried Slippery Elm? I think you can only take it for a few months but it really helped my gastritis to subside and to be able to eat more things previously restricted. I will leave it off for a few weeks then take some more.

no first time hearing of this. What else do you know about it?

Hi, everyone's reflux triggers are very different but mine was mostly linked to anxiety and under eating/eating acidic foods daily. In order to heal from reflux you need to address the root cause otherwise you are just managing it. I'm mostly symptom free these days with a few minor flare ups if I slip back to my old ways. I have addressed my anxiety with meditating, breathing exercises and acupuncture and also took slippery elm and Marshmallow root supplements along with chewable DGL tablets which I still take now if I feel symptomatic. I wish you all the best.

Thank you so much for your input. It seems like it doesn’t matter what I eat, it’s just brutal the amount of acid I have. I’m being sent to a specialist, but like everywhere it’s a long wait. Hopefully have a scope.

Thank you I’ll look those Marshmallow root and DGL tablets up.

Not a doctor but if food doesn't seem to be the cause then you need to be looking at other potential root causes, constipation, low stomach acid, anxiety, vitamin deficiencies or food intolerances. There's a huge amount of research into the brain/gut connection which I why I believe that anxiety was the main cause of mine. If you have access to Instagram or you tube, Molly Pelletier has been a really helpful information resource which is where I discovered the supplements. My endoscope and abdo scan were both clear further indicating it was situational. Hope all this helps. It can be very overwhelming with all the medications online but addressing the root cause is key and more often than not that doesn't involve medication.

Oh thank you I will look Molly up. I really feel that the medication for my stoke is the culprit, and I can’t stop it.

I was on omeprazole for sometime then it wasn't as effective so went on to Dexilant and it worked very well but then it also stopped working so now on pantoprazole 40mg one a day

I suffer from chronic inactive gastritis caused by helicobacter which was eradicated in October last year but symptoms are still there

Has slippery elm benefited anyone? Where can I purchase it
