Silent reflux

hi I have silent reflux diagnosed 2 years ago after having extremely sore throat. I took PPIs which did relieve it. I then altered my diet and stopped taking the tablets - I thought it was under control. However last June I developed a cough which got worse and worse resulting in fluid on the lung and difficulty breathing !!!! After several visits to doctors with 4 lots of antibiotics and steroids I finally saw a doctor that read my history and put me on pantoprazole (PPI). Finally stopped cough -able to sleep at night👍 I intend to wean myself off of them and see what happens. A good book is The Acid Watchers Diet. Hope you get it sorted
A cough is a classic symptom of reflux. Read. Dr.Jamie Kaufman's book Acid Reflux Diet. An alkaline diet helped me after a few months.
Yes I have silent reflux. I have had a cough for years but it comes and goes so I kind of live with it. I have taken PPI but they are not good for your bones so I only take it if I have a bad patch. The symptom I don't like is a burning mouth and I worry about the effect on my teeth. My dentist prescribes me a toothpaste with extra fluoride to hopefully offset any damage . I find chewing gum is a help reliving the throat and the mouth. I have also had to cut out some foods like red wine. All in all its manageable,
Are you able to see an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist to confirm (or not) this diagnosis? They do a series of small tests and observations which allow them to tell you straight away, and prescribe for you the proper medications to manage it. The "silent" part comes from the fact that there is no sensation of burning, but it often comes with a sore throat and/or cough instead.
It's not that easy its getting the doctors to make an appointment then it's the waiting time that could be months .My doctor said once my results are back from my lung function test then will look into my coughing. Let's wait and see .
It sounds as if you may be experiencing bile reflux.
This can happen after surgeries such as you have had. It can cause the burning sensation as experienced with those with acid reflux. Hoarseness, burning mouth and throat etc.. The difference is that the bile is not acid but has a rather high ph of 8. This causes problems within the stomach which is acidic. The high ph can also cause problems with throat and mouth. I am currently experiencing some of the symptoms as you are. You want to research “ bile reflux” online as there is info about this condition that will give you a better understanding of how this is impacting the gastrointestinal tract. There are various medications used or prescribed to help with the problem. I had a hernia repair and rap that is now causing my problem. I am being scheduled for a redo of the procedure, but definitely not with the same GI doctor.
Good luck to the both of us🙂
