Hi, I've been taking omeprazole 20 mg once daily for about 6 weeks and have an endoscopy on the 19th of January. After reading about the rebound effect I decided to drop down to taking it every other day and after the first day of not taking it I am experiencing symptoms (feeling of acid in throat and chest) is it normal for rebound to happen this quickly? I'm taking some herbs, gaviscon and DGL to try and reduce symptoms until my endoscopy. Thanks

Acid rebound 1 day after weaning off omeprazole
I am sure it will get better as your system adjusts. I took Gaviscon Advance, pro-biotics, plain yoghurt, manuka honey and bland acid reflux diet, no alcohol or fizzy drinks. Used a wedge pillow to sleep in. Hope you feel better soon.
Hi, I know, trying to come off Omeprazole is a nightmare. I have been on it for six years and have tried to wean off it several times and replace it with Famotidine, but after usually around six days the acid reflux rebound comes back severely, so it's a viscous circle and I end up in desperation going back on them. I am now on 10mg a day and Gaviscon at night. So having rebound symptoms after a day or so may happen, as you have only been on them a short time. Good luck with your Endoscopy next week.
Thanks so much I just thought it was a bit soon after stopping for it to happen but who knows! It may also be the little bit of chocolate I had the other day 😆 hope you manage to get off them soon too!
Has the rebound symptoms improved for you yet? Just wondered what finally worked for you and how long it took?
I am taking Omeprazole for 8 weeks, then my dr told me i will have to taper off it alternating the Omeprazole and an common H2 Receptor Antagonist like Zantac 360 (Famotidine) over about two weeks.
It was only for about a week or so was quite bad one day then disappeared the next. Very had to distinguish between rebound and the normal state of things being off PPIs. I also found taking DGL 20 minutes before eating really helpful too. You will be fine just try not to read too much into your symptoms as I find that makes it worse and causes food anxiety.
