I need to stop my ppi for 14 days so dr can test for H pylori as 28 days on them & I’m still getting some heartburn & discomfort between shoulders

Has anyone just stopped them or do I need to reduce them … I don’t want to get rebound acid

I stopped mine for 14 days but had only been taking them for a week when I stopped. If you are on 20mg once a day you could try a week of reducing the dose to nothing. Either ask dr for some 10mg but you can cut the capsules carefully and divide the powder into two if not. Or try taking 1 20 mg on alternate days. I was give. 28 days but after taking them a week I found my acid improved and managed ok for two weeks without for the h pylori test - was careful eating though. Since then if I feel it’s coming back I take for 2-3 days then stop - which seems to work for me anyway - my dr was ok with this when I asked.

A pharmacist should be able to advise or ring the dr for advice as they are the experts and I can only go on my own experience. Hope it helps anyway.

aah ok how can I take the powder though ? I’ve been off 2 days but today I’m getting bit of burning sensation again in stomache & bit in top of my back so just taking gaviscon …. I’m going to persevere as I need this test to rule that out …. Wondering if dr will try a different Ppi or refer for further tests 🤷‍♀️ with how nhs is atm who knows x

it’s very fine grain so you could put use a small piece of bread with jam on it and put on the jam so it doesn’t go everywhere?

also do you know what foods aggravate you - in which case avoid - also very small portions and nothing after 6pm - sorry if you’re already doing this. I know certain ones really do aggravate me - raw onion, tomato, cooked onion if in the evening, chocolate, wine and a few other things.

I tried Gaviscon but didn’t find it did very much, either liquid or tablets but some find relief with it.

Hope you find a solution, it really does drag you down as I know from my own experience,

I haven’t really found any particular food that triggers it just being kind of careful & trying to drink plenty more of water as say it’s a neutralizer for acid …. Was your symptoms bad pre omeperazole?

had reflux for about 8 years, nothing on gastronomy and given 28 days lansoprazole - came back as soon as I stopped it. Told by drs to keep at bay with diet etc and Gaviscon - but it never really went, plagued me very badly, many nights interrupted sleep, not able to bend without discomfort. Got to a point recently where it was so bad I was getting heart palpitations- so eventually just had to go to dr. I think I had got into a spiral of acid/anxiety causing acid and palpitations to worsen. I had a week on omeprazole which seemed to stop it then had two weeks off it for h pylori test (negative) and since have taken it for 2/3 days once I have felt it coming bsck - dr said it was ok.

Feeling much better but still watching diet to avoid aggravating as don’t want to be on it daily as conscious of long term effects.
