I have a question please. Since a had the IL surgery I pretty much always have a burning sensation in my mouth. I take Lansoprazole 30 mg 2x and recently Cimetidine. It still feels if I just burnt my mouth with scalding hot tea. Tasting food is another story. I can smell it, but tasting it, not so much. I read magnesium may help. Does anyone have similar issues? Thank you, Katze

Have you asked your doctor about this? Sounds to this non-medical type like reflux...I take 40mg pantoprazole twice a day after an IL (in 2015) and still get quite frequent reflux which I quell with Gaviscon Advance. Nothing works as well in the way of an antacid (for me).
I mentioned it serveral times to my GP. He prescribed cimetidine because Famotadin had terrible side effects. Most the times I feel like a bother to them. My surgery was in 2017.Some doctors seem surprised I am still here. Sadly everything is very expensive here. Thanks for all you input. It was much appreciated
Hi. I have exactly the same have had for many years. No sense of taste really for ages and my sense of smell since covid is almost for gone. Im 14 years on from IL. I take 60mg lansoprazole daily, a sore or red tongue is apparently a side effect. I have had a surgeon be surprised im still alive too.
B12 deficiency can cause a burning tongue sensation. As I expect you know, digestive tract surgery, and also PPIs, reduce your ability to digest food effectively resulting in multiple vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Ask your doctor for a blood test to check your levels are good (not just ok). Worth doing this privately if your doctor won't help.
Silent reflux can also cause mouth and throat issues.
I had Ivor Lewis in 2017. Took a long time for taste to come back and black coffee and white wine still taste awful ( I try every now andvthen). I do get a sore dry mouth, not quite burning but gets near at times. I just stuck a lot of sugar free sweets which helps. Not sure what causes it.
I’d ask your dr or dietician to give you a nutritional blood test and to check for anaemia. I had the op and am always low in zinc for instance. Sore tongue can be caused by many things. My taste came back after 18months but I still can’t stomach ( sorry about the pun) white wine or white fish both previously favourites. See if your dentist or pharmacy can recommend a non alcohol mouth wash to calm down your tongue. Eat calming cool foods too, plenty cucumber, ice cream and yogurt. Good luck.
