I can really relate to this! I have it too! A few days ago I felt I had to fill, empty and refill the kettle over and over, and then switched my computer on and off before it felt 'right'. That's how I started my day!

It can be really crippling. And it can take over your life. But there is a lot you can do to improve it.

The problem with repeating something is that the more you do it, the worse it usually gets. A little doubt creeps in that you really haven't done it 'right', really haven't expunged those thoughts, and you feel you have to do it again. And again. And again. And on each occasion the doubts get bigger.

There are always going to be occasional lapses, as I had the other day. But on the whole by using CBT techniques you can overcome the worst of it.

Start small and work your way up. So pick something relatively easy to begin with. It helps to make a list of things you repeat the most often. Try telling yourself you will do it once, and leave it at that. Don't ruminate or go over it in your head. One tip is to tell yourself you will not worry about it now, but will give yourself ten minutes worry at say half past four, or whatever. Then half past four comes and goes and you've forgotten all about it.

If the urge is too strong, and you still feel you really have to do it again, don't blame yourself or feel you've failed. Each little attempt is helping to unpick the OCD.

I'm sure the lockdown has caused a lot of people with OCD to get worse. Part of it is not being as busy as normal. It's tempting to not do things when you have this 'repeating' behaviour as it can be so exhausting. But do what you can to occupy yourself as much possible. Being inactive makes a gap into which OCD will spread.

It can and does get better!
