Hormones and ocd

I absolutely hate PMS and OCD. I’m super annoyed with everything . I feel really down today. My anxiety is through the roof and I constantly feel like my “fear of saying something awful or impulsive “ is coming on even stronger during this time of the month ..🥺I just want to stop overthinking every little thing....

I know the feeling! Hormones do make a difference with OCD, at least for women. I found it got much worse with PMS. It's now a few years since I menstruated, but there is still a hormone cycle, though not so strong, after the menopause, and I find myself having a few grotty days each month.

One thing that can help is a daily dose of vitamin B6. The B group of vitamins apparently can help with brain function generally, and B6 has often been prescribed for women who suffer badly with PMS. Now it's been available over the counter for a number of years.

Another thing that might help, if you're not already taking it, is the Pill. It certainly lessened my symptoms when I was on it. It's now considered all right to take it back to back, without a break, so you don't bleed at all, though this isn't compulsory.

Try not to worry about saying something you didn't mean to. This is one of the forms OCD often takes, the fear of saying or writing something that is offensive or incriminatory. But outside of Tourette's, people just don't go round saying or writing down things that are inappropriate, no matter how much the urge. And it doesn't sound as though you've got Tourette's.

I took your advice and took my B vitamins this morning. Today is better for me. I’ve been on birth control before (implant and shot) and it seems like it caused me to be even more depressed. I haven’t given the pills a try yet. I’m just trying to relax and not worry so much because I know this feeling will pass! I feel more at ease hearing from you , Thankyou :)

So pleased you're feeling better! It's good to remember that when you're feeling really grotty you will have good days as well!

The Pill doesn't suit all women, so if you do think about going on it, make sure you discuss with your doctor how the implants and shots made you feel.
