With all the fuss about horse meat being beef meals, i was wondering what to say to get you all thinking about other ra, well hope this is ok for you, what was your favourite from your childhood. Mine was something my mum used to make it was a hotpot, layer of potato, layer of onions, the bacon until the big mixing bowl was full and then she would put it in the oven until it is cooked. I loved it. Just a quick update before i leave this to you all, i am going to the drs on monday. I am having pain in my feet at the moment. Well my friends what is your favourite food..............

What can i think of to cheer us all up.....
A roast dinner! It brings lovely memories of my Dad cooking Sunday lunch. Happy thoughts.
Love Alison x
Thats sounds really tasty Silvi, and Sunday roasts live on in my memories too. My mum used to make devine roast potatoes and gravy made with the meat juices, but my favourite was rolly polly pudding with syrup and custard poured over the top, yummy.
Ummmmm....... Im hungry!!!
I have many memories of food But my mum used to make a minced beef sauce with onions and tomatoes and stuff a marrow, grown in our garden - it was just delicious and perfect for cold, wet miserable days!!!
Now, my hubby cooks and apart from a good roast he is also good at fish cakes, making curry just for me and producing wonderfully tastey casseroles!!!
My daughter has started cooking too and makes a mean bakewell tart!!
But my fav has got to be treacle tart and custard..........
and on that note, my tummy says its tea time!!!
Happy eating - everyone!!!

One of my real favourites was a vegetarian meal - it was an oven baked rice dish, with rice, tinned tomatoes, onion, celery, etc and curry powder to flavour it. Really good, hearty, filling meal with grated cheese sprinkled over the top.
The other favourite was also vegetarian (we did eat meat, but just not a whole lot) and was what mum called a "cheese pudding" - a mix of breadcrumbs, grated cheese, milk and egg, and again oven baked and served with boiled onions, carrots, cabbage. It was kind of like a more solid cheese souffle.
I suppose one reason I really liked those meals was because they were a lot different from things my friends were eating, I still enjoy both, though its not quite so easy to make the cheese pudding with gluten free bread.
My Mum lived in India most of her life - she & my gran used to make thingys that went with a roast dinner called 'doughboys'! I suppose they were a sort of dumpling but crispy on the outside, with onion in - I've not got the recipe which is a disaster, they were wonderful!
Now when i was living in Plymouth a long time ago,i went to sunday lunch with a girl i worked with and her gran made them and very nice they were too.xx
Has to be a bacon sarnie!
Oohh: I could be a real fatty if I had everything I longed for. Proper pork crackling would be a must. However, if it's from childhood it's my Nan's apple pie with the sugar crust on the top. A very close second would be bacon ribs with cabbage.
Hi Sylvi,
My Dad bless him, used to make Sunday Roast, the gravy was always so tasty.
Also from way back in school, I used to love upside down pineapple cake with custard.
Makes me warm inside just thinking about it.

Ps hope all goes well at te Docs on Monday Sylvi.
As a child I learnt a lot of home cooking from my mum, she was the best in my eyes, My favorite's were all homemade a bacon pudding a beef stew with dumplings, and not forgetting her home made apple crumble, She also used to bake cakes to, fairy cakes, loved them,
I now try to follow in the foot steps and cook bacon pudding and a beef stew, but i don't think i could ever cook like my dear mum :))))))
coconut towers, baked scone with coconut and jam on the outside like mum used to make.
My mums Christmas dinner there was so much food three roasts loads of veg
Just loved them x
Giant yorkshire puddings filled with rich gravy!
Here is a thought for you all,i have tried to cook my mums hotpot with bacon and i can never get it like she used to make. Do you all find the same? It must be something magic that only mums have.xxx
well shopping yesterday and i was asked what did i want with my buger
so i said i will have a fiver each way please.
why dont we change the racing terms from Firm to Good Going
to Well done , Medium and Rare
its not verry good this little lot comming out wonder what we have been eating all this time.
dont look at what can be passed to humans from horses and who knows why these things got in the food chain cattle and sheep in uk have to have like a passport to them because when they have been injected etc they can't be sold into the food chain for so many months
i use to love me grans cooking in the oven at the side of the fire slowly cooked to perfection nothing wasted Ever i miss my gran THE DAYS WHEN YOU DIDNT HAVE A FRIDGE BUT A LARDER and hey you never had any problems with the food in them days you knew it was all fresh
i always wonder how she managed with her crippling ra a real fighter
SLVI Dont let the doc give you them nifedipine made my lips sore back to docs again helped with the feet chil blanes but hey not having another problem.
chips covered in co-op's tomato sauce - the old recipie from the 80's though - it's not the same now, i think they've put cloves in it now and it tastes horrible!
My favourite meal is anything edible. My wife says I'm easy to feed. Not too keen on horse. In fact I ruined half a pound of minced beef yesterday, - put it in the oven and forgot to take the reins off. Ugh!
May try saddle of beef next
Has anyone else found that recently lasagne is giving them the trots?
Sorry - couldn't resist.
Mum used to make a mean bread pudding x
Had a burger last week. Got home and instead of going through the gate, got this overwhelming urge to jump the hedge.
My mum used to make 'doughboys' just like yours, they were delicious. I think they are a Scottish dish, my relatives up there still make them. Must check the recipe and make them sometime.
My favourite meal is mince and tatties, mince has to be extra lean (no horsemeat lol) and lentil soup made with stock from a nice ham hough. Reminds me of my youth way back in good old Scotland.
I am pleased that your all responding to this,i have never lost sight of the fact that we have ra,but i just want to cheer you all up and it also helps me as well. Thank you all for that and i am sure there will be more people adding to this before it is finished.xxx
My mum was an awful cook, bless her,the veg went on at the same time as the meat,so the best bit of the Sunday roast was the mint sauce, mint fresh from the garden. My mother-in-law on the other hand was a brilliant cook & taught me so much but I never did master her home made apple pie, that was delish. My youngest son cooked the dinner on xmas day & it was the best ever,he now has the job for life but don't let on,only I haven't told him yet!!!
thought of another you will like this not a lot
MR RUMI DOCTOR HAS TOLD ME I HAVE TO STOP EATING FROZEN MEALS
BECAUSE I HAVE TO REDUCE MY shergar intake
Like it minka, When I was young we lived on a Stud Farm, (no we didn't eat horse meat). I hate the thought that I may have eaten horse meat somewhere, they were such a big part of our family.
My fav foods would be my mother's fruit tarts, apple, gooseberry, wimberry, rhubarb, with fresh cream or custard. Roast dinners with proper gravy and yorkshire puddings, which I was taught to do from a teenager. Welsh cakes, no one made them like my mother and grandmother, fairy cakes and sponges, I could go on!!!!
Jan
I like it!!
My Mum used to make a thick rice pudding that you could stand your spoon up in and the top was so crispy it was delish, we had this with a beautiful apple pie... mmmm, mmmm.
Now i have to make it for my husband who's Mum also made thick rice puddding.

i was bought up in a care home so no mums home cooking, but the home used to do lovely meals beef stroganoff was always my favorite and no matter how i try i can never make it like they did,but when i was older and went back to visit i found out it was all dried ingredients, but i still enjoyed it,nowadays i really enjoy cooking a lovely curry always gets the kids back around the table xxx
my gran used to make lovely Victoria sponges you could not get your mouth round it !!!!!!!!!!!!yum. i have tried i always fail. i buy them now @ woman institute i cant go wrong . cheating yes xxxx
Rhubarb or apple crumble with custard and my mums sunday dinners.
Loving the horseplay jokes lol!
One of my favorite dishes that Mom made was called Spaghetti Pie. We can't find her recipe so I think that it might be lost forever. I also love stroganoff (minus the meat).
Oh my goodness what a lot of lovely comments on yummy food. My Mum was a great cook to but my grandmas egg custard was to die for. My Dads home baked bread was wonderful and he also made choccie eclairs even though he didnt eat them lol. No wonder I have had to watch my weight all my life lol. Happy memories though. May be now I have a lovely red and white kitchen and an oven that works I will start cooking properly again. Sharon
