hello, sorry that you are in pain. Costochondritis is painful, so could well be responsible for some of your pain, but should have started to clear up if you've had it since May. I Have had short episodes, but has never lasted 7 months! But it must be a relief that the doctors haven't found any problems with your heart and lungs. All I can suggest is to talk to your GP and ask if there is anything else that could be causing it, or treatment that could help. A lot of people with RA find that a low dose of amitriptyline helps to control the neuropathic pain, and need it as well as the usual painkillers that deal with the basics. Hope you manage to get some relief, good luck. Polly
The chest xray should have shown up anything serious in your lungs, so I guess it sounds like it is costochondritis. I have pretty much chronic costochondritis, but I don't always have that burning feeling in throat and lungs that you talk about after exertion. Mine is more difficulty in getting my rib cage expanded which means I can get a bit out of breath.
You could try asking your GP if it would be worth trying a short course of steroids to see if it clears (which means it probably is inflammation), or ask if they can get another radiologist to review your chest xray and make sure there isn't anything like pulmonary fibrosis,, which can sometimes be a bit hard to see on xrays. Glad the cardio checked out fine though.
Hi I suffer with this and have been long diagnosed with chronic costocondritis , I also get the burning sensation I find my burning starts as I tend to take shallow breaths as unconsciously I avoid expanding my chest wall.
Mine isn't from running ( I have forgotten how to do that lol.) it's just the usual mobilising about the house.
I know it sounds odd but when the pain is very bad I tend to breath from the top part of my chest and gasp a bit, hence the burning. When it happens , i sit myself up as straight as possible and force myself to breath normally , after a while of calm breathing the burning then stops.
The advice you have already been given is correct and you should see your GP and sort out your pain relief. Good luck.
