I got my car there motability,go to a ford garage they do a nice on that is higher. It is ideal for me to get into. Check what garages there are that do motorbility and tell them what you want, not what they want you to have. As i say we have a ford diesel and it is good. Sylvi.xx

Hi

I get high rate mobility and exchanged it for a car, I have done for the last 15 year. Currently I drive a Nissan Qashqai Tekna which is great for getting in and out of.

Have a look at Motabilities website which shows the car options, amount of DLA which is paid and deposit (if needed) amount. Not all cars need a deposit, for example you can get a basic model Qashqai for nil deposit.

motabilityonline.co.uk/cars...

Go to or call any dealership which deal with motability (you can google their website and have a look at the cars) and ask to speak to the motability advisor, he'll then guide you through the process which is simple, they should make an appointment for you to go in and discuss your requirements and the type of car you need.

When you go in for an appointment take your driving licence paper and card copy if you have one, proof of award, a utility bill for confirmation of address and leave it in the hands of the advisor to do the rest.

Honestly it's that simple, good luck.

Thank you both for your advice, but I dont know if I can get Motability as I only have the highest rate DLA and not Motability!! Do you think it is worth asking again?

You say you only get DLA, DLA has 2 conponents care paid at 3 rates (low, middle and high) and Mobility paid at 2 (high and low)

If you only get DLA high rate care you must have told DWP your almost housebound and unable to go out at all.

It's always a risk asking for a review however, you can send in a new claim for mobility stating care needs are unchanged and apply for mobility only. I do advise you get some help from CAB or another welfare advisory service, there is a risk your currant award will be changed. But with the help of CAB you may have high mobility added.

Good luck x

You could also ask for review asking them to look at the mobility side again, but this is risky therefore, go to CAB for advice before you do anything.

DEFINITELY use CAB to get advice on how to get a review and to help you fill in the forms. You would be highly likely to muck up your existing award if you tried to do it on your own, but CAB know their stuff on this, as well as being able to help you through any appeals if that becomes necessary. It is just so important to use exactly the right words in your application, as even just getting a few words wrong might mean it is totally misinterpreted by the decision maker. Ask for the disability welfare person at the CAB, and make sure they do have access to information like the decision-makers manual though.

Just to clarify - you don't have a separate "motability" award - you are eligible for motability cars if you have the right DLA award (which I think is just the High level mobility component). It also has to have a certain amount of time left on it before it is due for renewal as well.

I just thought I'd also mention that you might want to do some sums first to figure out how much it is going to cost you, particularly if you rely on using the DLA money you get for other things. I personally decided that it was better for me to buy my own second hand (but not too old) car and pay for it myself than turn over my entire DLA mobility component to motability, and that it cost me a lot less that way (because I also use my DLA money for other disability related things). But, you can't underestimate the convenience of motability with having a brand new car, all the insurance, tax and maintenance sorted. Something to think about though, and I might change my mind when I need to replace my current car.

Hi Nellysgran

If you receive the Higher Rate Mobility component of DLA you should be eligible to join the Motability Scheme. To lease a car through Motability, you must have at least 12 months’ award length remaining. There's a lot of information on the Motability website which fully explains the scheme: motability.co.uk/

Kind regards
