I have taken both and i am still on them at the moment. I am having problems with my breathing at the moment so i'm not sure what will happen when i see the rheumy tomorrow. I haven't noticed any side effects, but that is me i can't say for others. If you try it and it doesn't suit you well you have tried. I am of the believe that if you don't try something you won't know if they would work.

Best of look with whatever you decide to do. sylvi.xx

thanks silvi ,i felt really unwell on mtx tablets so the thought of that is what is worrying me ,but like you said if i dont try ill never know ,

I have been on injectable MTX plus Sulfasalazine plus Hydroxychloroquine in the past. Each drug does something different to the next one, and I have read that combinations of drugs are more effective than taking just one.

You may get side effects, no one can know in advance.

Sylvi is right when she says you should try it out. You can always stop.

But do take your Folic acid for your MTX and do drink lots of water to keep everything "flushed out" as my Pharmacist says. I think its to do with avoiding a build up if your system gets sluggish.

Best of luck. Let us know what happens.

I'm on both (plus hydroxy) and for me the combination made a difference as MTX alone wasn't enough. From what I've read, research says that combinations are more effective as each drug enhances the other, so if your RA isn't under control then worth a try. For me the side effects are annoying rather than unbearable, as main thing is being sun sensitive now, and a bit of queasiness/dodgy stomach from time to time. It took a while to get used to the sulpha, and was much better when I was given the enteric coated ones. Good luck, Polly

I had Hydroxichloraquine added to MTX (now on 17.5mgs) about 7 weeks ago and for the past few days I have been feeling much better in terms of pain. I think it's the combination of the two and the rise in dose of MTX that's really making a difference. Unfortunately the oral MTX makes me feel really sick at this raised dose but sure it will settle down as other side-effects (weird spots on my face and mood swings) seem to have done. I chose Hydroxy because I'd already tried Sulpha and it hadn't agreed with me but also I read on this site that the combination of therapies is now thought to be the most effective way of treating early RA and PA - and this particular combination was thought by the rheumatologist on NRAS to be the most effective one of all. I have been taking 4 sulphasalazine along with 20mg mtx and 1 hydroxcholoroquine daily for past year and the results on the whole are amazing for me, very little pain or swelling anywhere. I get the odd twinge here and there and fatigue but other than that I feel mostly 'normal'..... Hope this helps.
