Any experience of shower seats?

We are intervening in my fathers showering arrangements before he has a fall. Does any one have any recommendations about shower seats?

yes I have two different types, as I have a shower upstairs and downstairs, upstairs I have one that is fixed to the wall which makes it very sturdy however its a pvc/leather covered which makes your bottom slide off slightly when in use/wet.

Downstairs I have a plastic shower stool /chair which is not as sturdy as the wall fixed one however it has holes in the seat to drain the water off so your bottom don't slide off. So I would next time round for me buy a wall mounted plastic chair with drain holes.

Hope this helps.

Hi Cathie, I have one of those rubber bath mats in the bath so I don't slip, would this be any use in a shower (as long as it doesn't cover the drain hole)?

I have one of the plastic stools with drain holes - the good thing is that it's height adjustable and also has a handle either side so I find that it's quite sturdy and confortable to use. I think it might partly depend on how big your dad is, and how big the shower is. I did try out a wall mounted one in a shop and found it a bit minimal as I ended up perching on the edge, so didn't feel too comfortable. But I do have a double size shower so the stool works for me as plenty of room and I can put it where I want - and indeed sit under hot water when times are bad. Grab rails are good to - but not the suction cup ones as not reliable enough. Polly

Thanks very much. I've looked some up and can recommend one for my father now. Standing up for a little while can be a problem can't it. But showers are so lovely!

Cathie, Besides the shower seat, the handiest help I love is the handheld shower head, has about three or four feet of twisted hose that attaches to the wall unit and is wonderful for reaching everywhere while sitting, also great for washing your hair!! My Mom had one several years ago, so I made sure I had one after using hers. L.xx

I know the sort of thing you mean and will put it on his list

My father is 101 at end of April - I should've mentioned it before. He lives alone but with a lot of people dropping in so much support

Thanks for all you've suggested
