Try something like these hon, as you can wet and soap/shower gel the sponge/brush then rub your upper/mid back and let the water lather you more. xx

Sorry would point out this gadget does not work for everyone with hand problems or those with upper joint arthritis it is much a case of the individual testing things to find one that suits their health need , but all suggestions are worth trying. There is a similar gadget for toilet paper to wipe your private parts but I found baby wipes were the best for flexibility, they are also useful to clean stainless steel without scratching or pressure.

No I’m not suggesting a sponge on a flexible stick would work for everyone .. it is just that .. a suggestion to show/to try something similar (“try something like these”) and not to go buy the exact product. Some people aren’t able to really hold anything when their hands/grip are so bad. I’ve been there on and off since diagnosis in 1995 so I have got some idea of what works for me if I’ve been bad with my hands. My post was to try help someone. What helps you and helps me doesn’t always suit others. That’s often the case. I use a Boots long handled wooden soft backbrush and squeegy on a stick and also something very similar as in the photo I posted and all been good for me. I think if products aren’t too expensive it’s worth a try to use something to see if it can help you rather than not at all.

We keep trying and looking to find something to help us with showering and washing as it can be challenging. I hope there is hope for improvement for your hands and shoulders.

I use a wooden long handle bath brush from the Body shop and rub it on a block of soap. I then hang the brush over the shower handle to drip dry. That's my method. Not a proper adapted piece of equipment though. I expect other people will use a variety of things.

Good luck.

snap my method. Also use an exfoliating glove. Rub it over the soap then scrub away. It’s so hard trying to be imaginative with this disease

I’ve got a long handled sponge I use that was a gift. Take a look at the many different Shower Aids on this website.

Other suppliers are available of course!

I’ve got a scrunchie type thing with a long handle on it, have a look on Amazon.

I’ve also got a pair of exfoliating gloves - I can’t reach the middle of my back with them though once you soap them up you get lots of lather.

I had a nice back brush from Boots I think it was, but one day when I went to use it all the bristles started to fall out. Very odd.

Would soap on a rope help you? At least you could grip the rope or hang it up.

I use pump dispensers in all my bottles in the shower, I find them much easier, also long handled brushes for backs and lower body. Complete care shop has a lot of aids, I’ve used them many times.

Look at Loofahs on Amazon.

They are very handy to wash your back.

You can buy soap-on-a-rope too…just tie it to your shower caddy…doesn’t matter if it slips out of your hands…you can just pull it back.

Hi Vonnie I also use long handed bath brush & all my soaps r liquid ones now. My cleaning spray stuff for house/bathroom I undo & pour a little on to cloths to wash down places with as sometimes I cant pump the nossle enough & I sometimes do that with my soap too. I,ve put all my soap blocks in loose tissue & put in clothes drawers makes em smell lovely :)

I’d avoid soap in shower, gel seems less likely to fall and be slippery. Pump action containers, if necessary decant gel into a good one. Happy showering

I use a foot washer and a flannel back strap from here:

I also have the step stool to use round the house. Very sturdy.

I like that site although I’ve never bought from it. When my husband had his hip replacement we changed all of our regular towel rails for grab bars - you can hang towels on them but you can hold on to them safely if you need to. I like the look of their toilet roll holder / grab bar.

in reply to Fruitandnutcase

I have a V cushion from them as well for reading in bed. I’ve yet to get grab rails, just use my shower thing atm! They seem dear, but it’s good quality stuff.

I’ve recently bought some pump dispenser bottles for my shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. So much easier then trying to squeeze bottles 😊

like others I use along handled brush. The one I have folds in half for reaching difficult areas. I also have a long handled toe towel to wash and dry between toes. One of my other long handled brushes, you can change the head for a sponge or pumice stone. I have to use a shower stool, and find hand pumps easier as if soap falls I can’t pick it up, due to stiffness from my AS. Here’s a photo of the toe towel.

I like the toe towel! I must get one. I push a soft dry facecloth inbetween my toes with the handle end of a backscratcher!

You can buy hands free automatic dispensers. I've got a small Dettol one in the kitchen (for hygiene reasons) but you can get bigger ones which you can fill with your own shower soap/shampoo which are battery operated or rechargeable. I've got a refillable pump dispenser as that's fine for me ATM but would consider the hands free option if I needed it.Our toilets and shower are both hands free and it's made such a difference 😊

Thank you for your suggestions Boxerlady, Knew you could get hands free toilets , but did not realise there were other handsfree items even showers. All my other taps are flick type but the shower is turn but still easier than the old fittings and once set can be left and just switch on.

shower gel with a push down pump will help

I've started using Palmolive milk & honey shower cream as it comes in a pump action container. It's very nice and creamy, and smells good too. I find it easier on my fingers and wrists than ones you have to squeeze to get the product out.

I have wall mounted pumps now (its glued on to tiles with a silicone sealant to avoid drilling as I'm in a rented flat). Dropping bottles due to grip hurt my feet! Before that I got pumps to attach to normal shampoo bottles (bought online for a few quid) but eventually wall mounted helped me better. Bonus is that it makes my bathroom look posh hahaha

Electric hand soap dispenser and cream dispenser for hand basin.

Shower stool and bath stool.

Tied a bath puff thingy to the electric pull cord as easier to hold to switch on/off.

Basket of flannels- much lighter than holding one large bath towel, just use 2-3 flannels instead.

*that one is called "aviva 3" it also comes as a single or double option. Each section is 300ml or there abouts. I paid about £40 for triple version. There's quite a few similar ones out there too

Soap on a rope maybe. And use a shower chair for sure as if you drop the soap bar you could very easily slip and fall in the shower

Hand rails in shower of corse .

And if you have a person to soap you up and rinse you off with a shower wand / hose with hand held spayed on the end . That would gbe the best for safety.

we have dispensers on the wall in the shower which I,push with the heel of my hand into a small sponge with a rough side …and a grab rail. It certainly isnt easy. Just been in hospital….orthopaedic dept …door easy to close….flush easy….taps…twisty tops….no way jose!! I did tell the physio who said she would tell someone but 🤷‍♀️. I might write a letter to the hospital when i am recovered. Seems to me disabled toilets are geared up for wheelchair users. Thankfully our bungalow is made easy for me🙏. Chin up.

I wrap in a big towel afterwards and aim the warm hair dryer at bits I can’t reach .
