Mucus (sorry)

Hi everyone I hope this cold weather we have yet again isn't hurting you too bad!I've had 2 lots of antibiotics in 4 weeks, sinusitis then crackles at bottom of my lungs.

I'm still coughing but could be tree pollen as I'm the same this time every year. I'm taking antihistamines daily, Dymisyta nasel spray twice daily but just can't get rid of the mucus that feels like a ball at the bottom of my throat.

Any tips please? Do you take any cough meds with Benepali and sulfasalazine? If yes what helps you? X

I'm not on the same meds as you, but I've had really bad sinusitis. Just finished second round of antibiotics and am finally feeling human again. I used a lot of steam inhalation with something like Olbas oil. Plus saline nose sprays and a steroid nose spray. I commiserate with you as I felt terrible too

Thank you Gillian. Yes it's been my worst sinusitis yet! My eye swelled, headaches like I've never had before, and the fatigue! I've been doing all of that but still got this horrid mucus. I think I need sunshine and warmth!

Yes my headaches were terrible and no energy at all. I also used a hot water bottle against my sinuses which sometimes seemed to give a little relief.

Yes I've got a microwave bean eye mask that gives a bit of comfort.

I know it sounds weird but I also have horrible sinusitis at the moment. I am steaming my face with my facial sauna, just water the sort of oils that clear your tubes really irritate my eyes, that seems to help along with preservative free eye drops because I get dry eyes and I have gone back to using one of those instant pain relief toothpastes for the pain in my teeth and that all seems to be helping.

I know my teeth are fine because I had dental X-rays last Friday so the pain in that area is caused by my sinuses. A previous GP used to try and tell me my ‘sinus’ pain was caused by my teeth and I would bounce back and forth between him and my dentist. It definitely wasn’t!

So far steaming seems to be working. I can feel myself constantly clearing my throat which is annoying but I’m ignoring that, I think it’s just normal for me. My ears feel horrible and my head feels like someone has put it in a vice and has tightened it up.

Some of the ladies in my art class were complaining about their hay fever and tree pollen last week - we live in the country so there are a lot of trees around and I was half blaming that for my sore eyes. I’m now wondering if something like hay fever set off the sinus infection as well as all the other symptoms.

I don’t want to take cough meds though, I’ve got some very nice Manuka honey throat sweets that I take every now and again. I only take hydroxychloroquine though.

I’ll keep watching on here in case anyone comes up with a genius idea to deal with hay fever and sinusitis. 🤞

Aww another sufferer! It's horrid isn't it. Manuka honey throat sweets sound interesting I'll Google them!

If you read the benepali leaflet it says something like caution with sulphazalazine. My rheumatologist told me to cut back one tablet at a time ,for a few weeks until no longer took sulphazalazine with benepali due to increased side effects . Perhaps taking both has made it harder to fight infection. It might be worth checking with your rheumatologist. Do re read the leaflet.

Well I didn't know that. I take 3g sulfasalazine a day. I just trusted the rheumatologist on it. I'll have a read. Thank you.

I suffer badly with rhinitis which then gets infected and end up with sinusitis. Ended up with 7 lots of antibiotics between December and march. All of the mucous drips to my lungs so I’ve permanently got phlegm on my chest. The only thing that dries it up is antihistamines (I’m on 4 a day), nasal steroid sprays and I do inhilations. Hope you get some relief it’s awful.

Crikey 4 a day. I didn't know you could take that many. I'm tired of being constantly bunged up and chesty. It wears you down doesn't it.

Yeah you can take quadruple the dose - which I am supposed to take 3 different ones (so 12).. but find even with 4 it can dry my whole body out so badly. But I do have angioedema and severe reactions to medications 😬 definitely won’t hurt taking an extra one on a bad day.

hi haz 58. I boil a glass/cup of lemonade a good dollop of honey , a squirt of lemon juice and a heaped spoon of brown sugar. It soothes the throat and can loosen phlegm. Oh and it’s pleasant to drink.

Ooh I've done the lemon juice and honey but never added brown sugar. Plus I only put a teaspoon of honey. I'll try your recipe. Thank you.

I have also had a mucus cough for six weeks now. I’ve had one lot of doxycycline which cleared the worst up but I know the mucus isn’t infected just annoying. I also took a course of steroids but only for a few days and had to use an inhaler for a while. I’m still crackly mainly at nighttime. I’m sick to death of it. I did try some fresh lemon juice with a teaspoon of Manuka and two or three slices of fresh ginger which helped a little. I bought some Vicks roll on which is so much better than the stuff you have to get out of the jar with gloves lol. I guess I don’t have any magic cures and figure I’ve just got to ride it out but god I’m bored with it.

Bored with it... I have stronger words but I'd get banned lol. The Vicks roll on is great no mess. Been using that for 6 weeks myself. Like you I'll just have to ride it out. We're moving very soon and trying to pack everything and being so bunged up and fatigued is dreadful.

Yeah I agree I’ve also had to sleep in the spare room otherwise neither hubby or me would get any sleep. Hoping warmer weather is on the horizon and will lift the spirits if nothing else. Good luck with the move that’s hard enough without the added bonus of feeling like crap. I’ve now got a cold sore that’s added to the party and chill blanes on my feet that won’t go coz I’ve had to wear slipper as it’s been so cold recently or it’s felt like it. I do try and get some fresh air daily but not sure that’s helping as I suffer with allergies too maybe I should take the antihistamines daily too as I’ve found in the past they do seem to clear up the cough quicker than any other remedy. Cough medicines are a no no may as well give me an industrial grade laxative haha.

I suffer terribly with mucus and I drink ginger tea and make my own ginger shots which I take on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. They really help. Xx

Very interesting to hear that many of you are also suffering with blocked sinuses and mucus. I got a respiratory infection beginning of February; two lots of antibiotics later I still have a sore throat and blocked sinuses. I too have tried the honey and lemon warm drinks. Also gargle with warm salty water. I'm on Amgevita and Methotrexate. Apparently, this can be one of the side effects of Amgevita?

I was like many of you but eventually after a CT scan my RA had given me yet another complication of it mild bronchiectasis. I’m on cimzia and 10mgms methotrexate. Drs kept treating me as multiple chest infections, not giving me long enough courses. One dr basically accused me of lying once when I’d said it appeared to get better but then stopped getting better although he’d given me a repeat course of the same antibiotic. He refused a sputum sample I’d done on two occasions and left me over Xmas and new year with nothing. Apparently I get multiple bugs in my lungs including MRSA which wasn’t sensitive to the drugs he was giving me. I was so ill lost half a stone in weight and had mild pneumonia as a result. I now have a lovely respiratory consultant and team and bypass the GPs as much as I can. They’re supposed to give me antibiotics to keep at home as prescribed by the consultant but won’t do that, but are quite happy to prescribe antibiotics that don’t work because they won’t accept the sputum samples. I give up.
