Awful acid reflux

Hi guys and please help! I’m struggling with acid reflux, It’s been murder for over a week. I can’t even have a cup of tea but it’s ripping up my throat! I don’t have alcohol, tobacco or caffeine and I seldom eat fried or spicy foods either! For years I’ve taken Omeprazole and it usually works but it’s just suddenly stopped! I’m using methotrexate jab, hydroxy, meloxicam, painkillers, Ramipril for blood pressure and an asthma inhaler. My RA is still problematic but this latest hassle’s really getting to me. Any help appreciated. M x

I have damage to my lungs from aspirating acid from my stomach. Like you I’d used omeprazole/ lansoprazole for years. I’m under a respiratory specialist for pulmonary fibrosis. She changed me to Esomeprazole initially, but it interacted with my clopidogrel, so was then changed to pantoprazole, which is so much better than the omeprazole. She also said to use Gaviscon advance, has to be advance, and not double action, as it creates a raft over the top of the stomach, preventing acid getting into the oesophagus. Since changing to the pantoprazole and gaviscon I rarely have an issue now. I have an electric bed, so sleep slightly elevated as well.

Thanks for your reply. Is Gaviscon Advanced a liquid or a tablet and can you buy it? I’m using my electric bed to elevate too. It’d be so much worse without it! M x

It’s comes in liquid,or tablets, and yes you can buy it. It comes in aniseed or peppermint. Not sure how well the tablets work, but the liquid is excellent. I just take mine at bedtime. If I forget it, I get the burning pain when I lie down.

Hi I am also on lansoprazole but I take famatodine too This is for preventing stomach acid as well but it works in a different way to the ppis you have mentioned. It may be better at controlling symptoms It did help me. I presume that you have reduced your acid intake too but you didn't mention it. The Gavascon product sounds good Runrig I think I will ask about that for protection as I have a hiatus hernia Do you take ibuprofen products as you need to reduce those as much as you can or stop them

You can actually buy the Gaviscon advance over the counter in places like Boots and Savers. You find if you spill a bit it turns into a dry substance quite quickly, so you can see how it works when you swallow it 🤪

I use Gaviscon Advance liquid. Tablets don't seem to work as well. I also have to be careful what I eat in the evening. Life seems to be getting more of a challenge. Take care.

Hi. This has really struck a chord with me at the moment. I am on Hydroxy, Leflunomide and Baricitinib and recently started experiencing an awful burning pain in my upper abdomen at night. It was bad enough to wake me and with a corresponding pain in my upper back I was feeling very miserable. I have now had a gastroscopy and am awaiting the results of a CT scan and the results so far show that I have gastritis and gastric reflux. Really this came out of nowhere. I have been on my meds for years and they work really well. I hardly drink have never smoked, only drink decaf and have a high fibre diet with lots of fruit and veg. I am not overweight. The first attack came after a meal of baked fish with veg so I have no idea what triggered it. I don't usually take omeprazole but have now been on it for a month and it makes me bloated and uncomfortable. Any idea why you suffer from reflux - has it been suggested it is connected to your meds? I have been told by the gastroenterologist no NSAIDs not even ibuprofen, so what do you use for pain relief? There is a 28 day plan for getting rid of acid reflux you can find on google which is written by a Dr and I am wondering whether to try it. Maybe have a look and see if that might help?

Thanks. Maybe it is meds over years as I’m on meloxicam (NSAID). I use Cocodomol and gabapentin for pain relief of both RA and Fibromyalgia symptoms. M x

Forgot to say that my gastroenterologist also recommended famatodine and my GP told me that if you are on Adcal (osteoporosis) then taking that will stop omeprazole working so you need to leave a four hour gap between the two.

I have experienced exactly the same. Gastritis from out of the blue. Had the gastroscopy etc. Gp gave me lansoprazole then omeprazole but both increased my post mtx jab nausea. Plus i take levothyroxine and bp meds ,so the time schedule for pills was a bit crazy. Taking pills to offset the affect of other pills .....the list gets longer ....😏

I get recurring acid reflux. Horrible isn’t it. My GP prescribed peptic liquid as well as upping my osemprazole ton2 a day for a month. It worked. So you need to see your GP 👍

Just to let you know Gaviscon can affect the absorption of Hydroxychloroquine so if you do use it there needs to be gap (around 4 hours) 😊

Thanks everyone for help, I saw the Doctor yesterday. They’ve upped the omeprozole to 2 a day and will reassess in 2 weeks. M x

Hi sorry you’re suffering. I have a condition called sphincter of oddi and they have had to increase my Lansoprasole due to prednisone also a glut of gavisgon advance does help.

Take care

I was on Omezprazole for years and it got changed to Lansoprazole when I was put on blood thinners to remove any possiblility of conflict from the Omeprazole. Both have worked well for me though. Best of luck.

I was on ozmeprazole and was getting bad heartburn but was changed to lanzoprole and it's now much better. Also find sleeping with two pillows helps. I hope you can find some relief from the heartburn.

I would stop the NSAI, and take Gaviscon Advance as well as the PPI. You might need an upper gut oesphagoscopy if it's suddenly got worse and they will test for helicobacter infection.
