Yes, it's a common side effect acid reflux and/or vomiting. In my young days when I travelled to India, I had to take two lots of anti malarial tablets, one of them being hydroxychoroquine and always suffered with gastritis and vomiting during the holiday. I was on Hydroxy and sulfasalazine at beginning of year and suffered badly with reflux, even during the day when I was upright I could get a mouthful of acid.

Are you refluxing acid into your mouth at night or are you actually being sick? If you are acid refluxing into the mouth then you need to see your GP who will start you on a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) to dampen down your stomach acid. If you are already on a PPI then this may need to be increased or changed. You can buy Gaviscon Advance liquid from the chemist but this is rather expensive and a much cheaper version is Peptac liquid (comes in 2 flavours). You will have to probably ask the chemist for Peptac liquid as it is often 'under the counter', but just as effective as the Gaviscon. If you are vomiting, then GP may still put you on the PPIs to settle inflamed stomach, however, it maybe time to review whether Hydroxy is right for you.

Stomach Acid isn't meant to be in your oesophagus or in your mouth membranes and will tend to 'burn' these more delicate tissues, it can be the reason people wake up hoarse with a sore throat in the morning without realising the connection (silent reflux). Bottom line, you need to get this sorted, as long term inflammation in these tissues can increase your chances of cancer.

Alternate medicine: you could try Deglycerized liquorice tablets, centaurium herbal drops, digestive support enzymes, to name a few. Hope you find good relief soon, best wishes.

IMPORTANT

If using a PPI and ant acid, please check all your drug information leaflets as these should not be taken at same time as some of your other medications ( may need to leave a couple of hours between when you take your RA meds and the PPI/antacids.

Thanks for your reply it's sometimes one or the other or have had both on one occasion. I'm already on omprezole (not sure of spelling) & I no to make sure there's a couple of hours between xx

I would see your GP. I was moved from Omeprazole onto Lansoprazole 30mg when I was at my worst. It might be worth a try changing the PPI and increasing dose. Taking Gaviscon or Peptac liquid last thing at night will coat the oesophagus and help to protect it. I keep a bottle of Peptac on my bedside table. Vomiting is not good and would suggest stomach inflammation/irritation but a change of PPI might also help that. If not, perhaps it time to move on from Hydroxy, but talk this through with your Rheumy or Rheumy nurse.

I developed acid reflux this time last year and was checked out for h.pylori (I was clear) then given omeprazole x two a day which is quite a lot but it dealt with the reflux - I don't want to be taking omeprazole forever though.

When I started the steroids I also went gluten free, my reflux disappeared and I was able to stop the omeprazole. I started taking the hydroxy and for a long time things were OK.

I thought it was going GF that had stopped the reflux. I'm now nearly finished the steroids still GF but my reflux has started again on and off although it is more off than on these days so goodness knows. I blame a pill I take for my blood pressure. I take it three times a day which pretty much kept the heartburn topped up all day. With my doctors knowledge I tried stopping it which was good for the reflux but eventually my blood pressure increased so I now take the BP meds twice a day and omeprazole every now and again. Could it be something else that yu are taking rather than the hydroxy? Or maybe hydroxy reacts with something else you are taking?

It could be I'm on rampiril for bp omeprazole amitrypiline mtx folic acid & paracetamol & hydroxy. I see rheumy nurse at the end of this month will ask her about this thanks for your reply xxx

Could you phone your rheumy nurse before the then?

It's pretty worrying if you are vomiting in your sleep - even reflux in your sleep isn't much fun.

It makes you wonder if the hydroxy just doesn't mix well.

I was worried about taking the PPI because either the prednisolone or the hydroxy (think it was the hydroxy) said not to take it at the same time as antacids and I was worried in case PPIs counted as antacids.

No sickness or acid reflux, but some nausea and dizziness. I've been on it 4.5 weeks. Hope your symptoms settle soon - vomiting in your sleep sounds scary and awful. :(

Thankyou it does scare me xx

I'm not surprised. It'll be tiny quantities and not actually dangerous, but your body is bound to feel like it's choking. :(

Good to try and get it sorted as soon as poss. It can cause respiratory problems too if left unresolved. Omeprazole or equiv is good as is sleeping well propped up plus not eating late and avoiding fatty spicy foods etc.

It's horrid, you have my sympathy.

Hi Chemar,

Acid reflux has been shown to sometimes happen because of a lack of stomach acid, not an over abundance. I know that sounds counter intuitive because you can taste acid?

This is what could be happening inside.

A lack of stomach acid could mean your food is sat in your stomach and not getting properly digested. This gives the sugars a chance to ferment and cause bloating, gas, inflammation and this expansion then drives the food or liquids back up.

You taste acid because there is acid in there. Just not enough to fully do the job of digesting your food.

Taking magnesium sulfate footbaths will increase the levels of acid in your stomach and also help your arthritis. It also detoxifies, helps with calcium balance/uptake and relaxes you beautifully. Putting your body into repair mode.

Lessons I've learned and what works for me.

Never eat after 6 pm

Eat little and often.

Avoid sugar and sugary foods like fruits. The sugar is the cause of the fermentation!

Eat veggies

Try not to drink fluids when you eat meals. It dilutes the acid.

If you drink smoothies or juices drink them slowly and give your body time to digest them. Just make smaller servings.

Never over eat

Take glutamine to line the stomach.

Soak chia seeds in water and drink them, the gel they produce is very soothing. Full of amino acids and nutritionally wonderful.

Get a rebounder (mini indoor trampoline) and bounce around first thing in the morning and after your last meal. Doing so gets the blood moving, lymph flowing and always makes you want to go to the bathroom. This is just the best ever! You can pick these things up second hand on ebay for pennies.

If you don't have a rebounder then sit ups off of the end of the bed, skipping, jumping up and down, crunches, walking for an hour work just as well. ;)

This is about getting your bowels moving just as much as what you put in at the other end.

If you are eating and moving properly you should feel like having a bowel movement a couple of hours after eating.

naturalnews.com/019756_hear...

Do all of the above and you should be fine. Too many people sit on their asses all day holding onto their poop for dear life. It is deadly and highly toxic so get rid of it and give the food you eat somewhere to go folks. Sorry if that's gross to you.lol

Think about it folks..... how can you have healthy digestion and beat leaky gut if your

not letting go of the toxic stuff the body no longer needs.

Have fun bouncing. :)

Best of luck!
