Hi, my dog has kennel cough every year. However this year as I am on Methotrexate 20mg injections I am classed as immunosuppressed.

Can my dog have a live kennel cough vaccine?

I am going to ask rheumy team but wondered if anyone has answer here? Thanks all

Hi Gramma

Always best to check with your Rheumy team and Vet as we can’t give medical advice on here. 😊

For what’s it worth, my dogs always have their Kennel cough jab , the Vet has advised not to let them touch my face etc for about 10 days after and always wash hands after contact.

I was on Rituxumab for 7 years and not known to myself caught kennel cough off a poorly puppy I rescued the Respiratory team had not seen it before , it’s still there dormant in my lungs, I’m more aware now, but ALWAYS check with the professionals.

I'm a vet and on Mtx injections. Id advise get someone else to take the dog to the appointment or ask your vet to get a nurse to hold your dog for the vaccine and you stay out of the room. Then for 7-10 days be a bit more careful about washing hands after petting your puppy and I personally don't recommend letting dogs lick round your face.

I've been on Mtx for seven years and so far not had an issue giving the vaccine

I just stay out of the room whilst my dog has her vaccination and don't overcuddle for a few days.

Hi

Like others have said, I don't think it is a huge risk if you take precautions, and our dog has had kennel cough vaccines in the past, especially as he is a rescue. They wont' release the dog without them having the vaccine. However, this time at the vets we declined it. Our dog has had them in the past but I use natural remedies on him now instead. I was very unsure what to do mind, so I think either is fine. 😊🐾

Zero issues here. We've never had a zoonotic transmission from a canine vaccination.
