Platelet rich plasma injections for knee pain.

I was referred by my rheumatologist to orthopaedics as my knees are grade 4 chrondomallacia. I was seen this week and as the rheumy advised against steroid injections as I had high doses of steroids last year for an autoimmune condition (scleritis) he recommended platelet rich plasma as an alternative. Has anyone on here had this treatment? It is supposed to stimulate regeneration of tissue. Does it work? Have looked at the NICE guidelines which are silent on success rates but would be interested in real-time experiences if anyone has had this. TIA

Here is a review of research into this. It generally seems to have good results.

Hi Autolupus. I’ve been seen by a trauma & orthopaedic consultant and on a cancellation list for treatment. So in the same boat as you. Hoping it has a positive outcome for us. Wishing you, and all on this site a very happy, pain free and positive Christmas and New Year 🤶🎄🎅

This review says: "Although PRP has been in use since the 1980s and has gained increasing popularity over time, there continue to be controversies and conflicting results regarding its effectiveness and the scope of its applicability in treating clinical conditions"

Best to read the whole thing and make your own mind up. personally I'm a bit dubious.

I have found Ostenil injections under guided radiology helpful. They have to be done privately as not available on the NHS. Over 20 years ago I was told I needed a knee replacement but with the help of these injections I went about 18 years before having a knee replacement. They tend to be given by knee specialists rather than the Rheumatologists.

I hope you can get help as painful knees are very debilitating and can stop us keeping mobile.

I haven’t any experience with Rich Plasma injections and hope you get the right help.
