I have been using MTX injections for 5+ years now. On Friday I proceeded with my usual routine, just after the injection I got a very sharp pain like a bee sting on the site of entry. I rubbed it but did not look at the site however it continued to sting. The following day I still had the pain and decided to look, I was surprised to see an area of 3" x 1" very red and raised it was painful to touch and still is to this day. Has anyone else had a situation like this?
I have been to the minor clinic and contacted my consultant, with no answer yet. I believe the needle did not go into the muscle but the surrounding area causing a burn under the skin. Anyone else got an idea?

Methotrexate can be given as a subcutaneous or intramuscular injection - it depends which device you're using.
It looks as if you might have caught a small blood vessel, or you have a small histamine reaction. The latter might be more of a problem if it continues or increases. I'd see what happens next time?
I had an injection of Gentamyacin in the thigh and two days later was rolling on the floor in agony.Red, swollen like an egg and so painful. Rang 111 got sent to A &E and the doctor said, the doctor who did the injection had gone into the small vein and it has bleed into muscle. It was measured and they said if it got bigger they would remove the clot otherwise it’s time. So give it another day or two. Luckily two days latter same size so no need to operate. Lesson was never let a doctor give an injection into thigh as they aren’t too good at them. lol x Ice and pain relief was given in A&E that did really help.
Something similar happened to me a few weeks back but I scratched it a bit and it became raised with white spots. It's starting to heal now.Subsequent injections have been fine
I recently had a biopsy and the next day this is what the area looked like.
The nurse told me it can happen from the needle entry and bruising.
I think they also nicked a nerve when the did the biopsy as I’m in so much pain it’s like a twinge pain every time I move the limb which was biopsied.
I was advised to rest for a week and not to do any exercise as such until it settles.
I suffer from cellulitis too which can look like this, it is a skin infection so I always ensure that I use the medical cleaning wipes before injecting then I put germolene over the needle entry point and cover with a plaster. Changing every 24 hrs for three days.
You might need a GP second opinion.
With cellulitis when it first starts you have to get a marker pen and mark the outer ring of the redness. If the ring enlarges I have to go to the GP for antibiotics as I know that way it’s cellulitis. If it gets smaller and fades it’s just bruising. Cellulitis can also be hot and itchy at the affected site.
