I have bronchiestaces amongst other things and I’ve been coughing up small amounts of blood for a few weeks. After a trip to A&e I was given a sputum test which came back saying I had a fungal infection somewhere in my respiratory tract. Has anybody else had this?
thank you

Yes and I had all sorts of tests following really stubborn infection including the sealed booth, MRI etc and am fine. I did the Pulmonary Rehabilitation course offered by Respiratory Consultant took high dose antibiotic Cephalexin for about 6 weeks and it'sbeen fine ever since. Apparently a lot of people will have it but don't know as not an issue. So don't panic and look up huff coughing to clear the chest. It really helped me and you might like me be given a rescue pack of antibiotics for the cupboard and mine have been unopened for 5 years so out of date really, but I can just reorder and in my case I have Cylindrical Brochectasis so its inherited as a duff gene that can cause Cystic Fibrosis. But no one in the family has that so it's just a bit of info they imparted in passing.
Thank you that’s useful to know. Because I have pbc the anti fungal meds are having a bad effect on my liver too and I’m feeling quite rotten. I wasn’t sure if this was common in bronchiestaces or not. I’ve not had too many problems with it before. I do my chest physio every day. Thanks for your reply. I hope you keep well.
That sounds nasty I was told I'd got MRSA in my lungs from the sputum test and luckily it was able to be treated with Cephalexin. I hope you're feeling better soon and ask about theRehab progaramme. Here we have a team that means we can bypass the GP by self referring and they come out but I admit I've needed to use them.
I'm sorry to hear you have received this diagnosis. Have you been told what strain of fungus it is, and what, if any, treatment you will be given? I hope A&E are following this up with someone ........🙂
Sorry- I misunderstood and thought they had picked it up from your A&E visit. I'm glad you are already on anti-fungals. I hope you are tolerating them. I have a fungal infection (not in respiratory tract/lungs), and as a temporary treatment I hadto have a 6 week course of high dose anti-fungals. I found it hard going. Thankfully my rheumy put me under the care of a lovely consultant microbiologist who runs a complex infection team and arranges what they refer to as hospital at home care. Nurses come out to do any necessary blood tests (weekly), a doctor calls once or twice a week, and you can call a helpline if you are having concerns. It worked very well. I hope you are being closely monitored too.🤞
