A foot surgeon refused to replace or fuse my ankles, said I wouldn't like the result it would upset other joints and in any event I was too young at 56 as they only last around 10 years. Revisions would be less successful. A rheumatologist said my ankles would be less painful once the joints had fused on their own. Thankfully, they are slightly less painful but uneven ground is uncomfortable.

What are they fusing? I’ve had the first 3 tarsometarsal joints on my left foot fused and the cuneiform navicular joints in the right foot fused (both with calcaneal oeseotomies). They were both long surgeries with very long recoveries but I’m very glad I had them done as it’s made a huge difference to my levels of pain especially at night.

Which joints does the osteoarthritis affect and which joints are they planning on fusing? Is it the ankle, subtalar or some of the mid-foot joints?
