Extreme swelling and pain in right foot

Hi friends! I am not sure which doc I need to call for this issue. The past 3 nights, i’ve Awakened with extreme pain in right foot, burning pain, like i’ve Been stung by a wasp. Any pressure, even from the sheet, makes it worse. My RA doesn’t seem to be flaring anywhere else, so I’m not sure if it’s RA or . . . Three days before the pain started, I fell off a 3’ high boardwalk. Landed on my right foot, then my hip. I was surprised when I didn’t feel pain or have bruising the next day, but then my foot started hurting. And the really weird thing that it hurts most at night, now while i’m Up and around during the day. Who would you call? RA doc, general practitioner or orthopedist?

Probably gp as it's been a few days, a and e and 111 are 24 hr since event , so as it's a injury type thing I'd call gp x if it worsens then 111. Xxxx hope you feel better soon x

Sorry to hear you're in pain, might time pain feels worse some how. If your GP is closed tomorrow may be worth trying 111, they might send you for an x-ray to rule out bone injury. However, if your pain is unbearable no doubt A&E would see you. Have you tried regular ice packs to sooth it? I think we are more aware of pain at night because we have nothing to distract it. Hope it settrsoon. X

Yes did ice the first night and it helped. Since it feels better during the day I put off calling doc only to wish I hadn’t by nighttime

I echo... calling 111/GP. I fell on my knee a year and a half ago ... had an X-ray all clear but 6 months later an MRI because knee wasn’t getting better and it turned out I’d partially torn the PCL and various other ligament damage. It is Important to rule out bone and ligament injury to allow it to heal properly. Defo follow RICE in the meantime. Don’t overdo it like I did.... I’ve ended up with a mess. I hope it’s ok.

Sparrowtracks, I note you're in USA. I'd be inclined to go wherever you can access x-ray facilities. I finished up with an ankle fused without surgical intervention after something 'gave' during a walk around an arboretum and a referral to orthopaedics was intercepted by physio, resulting in an inoperable fusion over time.

Darned interfering Physios! I’m where so am too because of the my Physio. I’m so sorry it got like this for you. 😔

as you are in the States, this sounds like a diagnosis to be made by an orthopaedic specialist?

Hi Sparrowtracks. It may be (and I really hope I'm wrong) gout. This can be brought on by injury and can be worse at night. Until you can get it checked, stay hydrated and keep the foot elevated. Anti-inflammatories would help if you can take them (not aspirin). My husband was diagnosed with gout several years ago and he was in such pain, he too couldn't even stand a bed sheet on his foot. Hope you get it sorted soon. x

My husband wondered if it was gout, but my feet are usually where RA flares. It just takes so long to get anything done these days in the US, that’s why I’m having a hard time know where to start. It was better last night and today, by the way.

Sometimes gout is mistaken for RA and as I said earlier, it can be brought on by injury. Will you contact your doctor? If it's been better last night and today, keep doing what you have been doing until you get advice. Good luck. x

Hi there, it does sound as though you could be going through a bout of Gout. My son has a problem with it and he only has it in one ankle. He is a chef, so no doubt you can imagine how difficult his job is at times !!

He finds that the night times are worse though.

Lots of sleepless nights.

I have painful swollen feet at the moment, My left foot is worse than my right foot. It used to be the other way round.

I hang my feet outside the bed, so that they are not touching anything, I can't bare the weight of the quilt touching them.

I don't mention anything about this to anyone normally, because everyone I know has their own health issues.

I haven't been posting here for quite a while, distracted by other things going on in my life. Breast Cancer in 2016 What a shock ! Followed by a very sick husband to care for until he passed away in 2017.

But, I am sticking my toe in the water again and it is good to read through some posts and catch up with people. I'm so pleased to find Sylvy is still here. What a lovely funny Lady she is :)

Anyway, back to swollen painful feet. Mind you I'm so surprised to hear about all the different conditions lots of people suffer with, or have suffered with. Many of which I've never heard of !!I

Swollen painful feet seems a minor problem to me now !

Keep safe everyone and don't forget to use your gloves and masks when you go out. Xxxxx

Welcome back! Although I don’t post much, ive learned lots from others! Your poor son! How do they treat gout? My foot pain and swelling went away as quickly as it came—only lasted 4 days. You’ve sure been through a lot. I will pray for pain relief and peace during these crazy times
