Smelly urine with Methotrexate

I’ve been on the injection for four weeks now and I have really bad smelly urine . Is this a common side effect please ?

Sounds more like a urine infection which you probably need to have treated sooner rather than later. Most unlikely to be a side effect of MTX.

It's not a side effect, it's quite likely cystitis, although it is possibly indirectly caused by it. Methotrexate reduces your immune system's ability to find off infection. Urinary infections are common when taking immune suppressants.

You need to see your GP now, rather than waiting. The usual rules about waiting a few days and seeing if it clears up by itself don't apply to those of us on immune suppressants. The bacterial infection can spread much more easily and can reach your kidneys quickly, so you need to see a GP as soon as you get symptoms. They will probably give you antibiotics to clear it up quickly.

Sound like a UTI. get the doc to check you pee. Don't leave it if it's a UTI you can get very poorly.

Have you been eating asparagus? This can affect your urine to give off a sulphurous odour. I

Could also be infection, uti,yeast,or bacteria etc

hi, Ive noticed a change in the colour (darker yellow), and a bit more of an odour since starting MTX about 4 months ago. No pain or fever so have presumed it’s a side effect of drug.

Smelly wee can mean a urine infection. Speak to your Gp or a pharmacist.

I have also been on oral MTX for many years & never had this issue. I think also it’s a question for MD.

How long have you been on it?

Before I started RA treatment with Methotrexate, my urine smell was ghastly. Only after a few months of treatment did that subside. Are you taking folic acid with it?

I have been on it for 3 weeks, the first week it was very cloudy and a light smell. Now it’s very dark and smelly for weeks two and three of the meds.

Hi Beachwalk I cant say I've had that reaction from Methotrexate. I think you may have a urine infection & need to see the Doctor to get it checked out? Good luck.

I do get this as I have been on methotrexate for years and did not connect it with that but I had a urine check and it was all ok so I am thinking you get this when you get older but I hate it - good luck and keep us informed if it is a UTI
