I am recently diagnosed with RA, I am on immune blockers. And I keep getting colds and coughs. is this due to my immune system being reduced. And is there anything I can do to treat this?

Thank you.

Yes unfortunately this is very common. Those of us with auto immune diseases, and especially if we are taking the RA biologic drugs, are at higher risk of getting all infections, including coughs, colds, flu and Covid. Shingles too! So do get any vaccinations you’re offered.

Then avoidance is the best strategy. Try to avoid crowded indoor spaces that are poorly ventilated and public transport if you can, or wear a good quality respirator mask if you can’t. Do wear a mask in GP surgeries and hospitals as they are full of sick people! Keep your home well ventilated (easier now spring is here - hooray!) and wash your hands frequently too.

The problem is that many are finding that after several Covid infections they seem to keep getting coughs and colds as their immune system does not seem to be working as well as previously. Don’t forget to test in case it’s Covid and check if you’re entitled to get antivirals.

Hope that helps!

I use Steremar nasal spray, it’s natural and helps me.

you don’t say what meds you are on but as you’re just diagnosed I assume a dmard ? Unfortunately nothing will stop you getting a cold, as before you had RA, just treat it as you normally would..

I find the nasal sprays that wash out your nose quite effective in reducing the severity of the cold. Also sucking cough sweets from when the cold begins rather than waiting for it to get to your throat seems to help.

Nothing much you can do about coughs and colds. Eating foods rich in vit c and zinc will help. I take vits for this, but I'm not currently taking medicines for inflammatory illness. I find vit c powder in a glass of water works well. You could as your consultant if this is OK with your meds?

I have just started amgevita ( had 3 injections, one every fortnight ) , it has worked wonders on my RA. For the last week I have terrible sinus and nasal drip and today I’ve started a cold. As yet no temperature, my question, do I take my next injection or miss it until my cold is better? I haven’t seen my rheumatologist for over a year , everything is sorted by ringing the nurses helpline. I don’t see him until May. Thanks for any help or advice would be welcome. I also take hydroxychloroquine.
