Blood in urine!

Hi,

Feeling extremely anxious as a dip test by the GP just before Christmas showed blood in the sample…couldn’t be seen with the naked eye.

I had gone to see the GP because of frequent peeing during the night but with no pain.

He sent the sample off to the lab to check for infection and prescribed antibiotics, just in case.

Lab results came back as satisfactory and no further action required.

However, I received a call from the surgery yesterday requesting a urine sample to check for blood again. I asked why when the lab result showed satisfactory. I was told that the GP is double checking. This has sent my anxiety levels sky high and I am imagining the worst!

I have RA and take Hydroxychloroquine tablets and Methotrexate injections, 20mg.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Thank you.

I think you’ve got a competent GP who is doing his job and ensuring that all is well and I would be pleased rather than more worried that you’ve got someone on the case ensuring that if there was another problem it would be nipped in the bud.

Blood in urine is common mostly caused by minor infections and usually cleared up either by the body itself or antibiotics. Please stop worrying and know that if you have something - which sounds hugely unlikely- your doctor is on the case and ready to act. All the best and be very thankful for your GP!

Thank you. I do realise that he is being rigorous which is a positive.

My friend did a few weeks ago. It did turn out to be a bladder cancer, She had an epidural , small cyst removed, chemo put into her bladder and then she was in a day whilst it was drained out and she was home. All clear, so that my help your anxiety a bit hopefully

Yes. People can have invisible blood . Always best to have it checked but it doesn't mean bad things. Your GP is just doing his job. I've had this for many, many years about 37. Once I was referred to a Urologist for a camera scan but everything was good. I've never seen blood in my wee . Hope this has helped

Thank you. I realise that the GP is doing his job and that I am very fortunate that our GPs are accessible and rigorous but I panicked!

I hope you've been reassured. I remember being scared at the time and that's natural. Take care

As Amnesiac says, it's most likely to be a minor infection (if it's anything at all 😉) but another possibility is that it's caused by vaginal atrophy which can be easily remedied by using a vaginal gel prescribed by a GP. I use this after a failed smear test attempt; it's very easy and I do feel more comfortable.

Yes it’s regular for me, and your lucky the GP s looking to make sure all is. Try not to worry as a drop of blood can turn a bowl of water pink. It’s worth doing just that next time you cut yourself as my Nephrologist showed me as it’s panic to see blood! I keep a record of visible blood, and when medications are taken but in 3 years no clear link. The hospital even did camera, special cancer check, CT scan even a kidney mri etc etc in that time twice and said sometimes no cause is found. I take Hiprex for UTIs every day and drink a lot of water as I do have CKD to flush kidneys on the instructions of my Nephrologist.

Did the GP check your GFR for signs of CKD ? just worth asking as stones, cysts can show up as blood. In my case I have none but worth asking about. My blood is from kidney but peeing in the night would be a good reason to get GRF done.

I only had excessive peeing for the one night..been fine since!

I had my monitoring blood tests at the beginning of December and everything was fine then and I have more tests on Monday so may find out then.

Thank you for the advice.

You just might have drunk something irritating that the body was flushing out. Gin has that effect on me! lol but doesn’t hurt to do another specimen anyway. I’d not worry too much. Xxx

it’s quite common to re-check urine samples when one has had a slight show of blood.

Don’t worry…just be thankful your GP is involved enough in his job to bother.

My GP doesn’t even take BP on rare visits ….which my previous HP did automatically, no matter what I was there for,

I have had microscopic levels blood in urine for years. Every now and then someone notices and wants to recheck, but generally it’s put down to taking anti-inflammatories. So I don’t worry about it now.

Get it checked but it is very, very rarely anything to fret about.

Don’t be concerned! I’ve had that several times. Merely a bladder infection that quickly clears up with antibiotics and they do a double check to make the antibiotics have worked. They should have explained this to you! Very common!

I have a lot of bladder troubles and frequently take samples into my doctors surgery for analysis . Often my test states some blood in the urine, it does worry me too, the GP sends the test to the hospital lab and invariably I end up with some antibiotics. Doctors these days are reluctant to give antibiotics u less it’s really necessary, I just hope one day they will find out more about this blood in the urine issue as I agree with you it is quite worrying … Good luck

I refused any more antibiotics over 2 years ago and demanded to see a Urologist. I did and he said millions of woman if tested have blood in urine, and like me have a UTI but the blood without any other symptoms like pain or fever doesn’t relate to the UTI it’s co incidence. He prescribed after I’d had a ct, spcial test for cancer and an mri a med called Hiprex. It’s actually an antiseptic and it seems to work. It’s not possible to become immune to its effect unlike antibiotics and I drink loads of water. I have CKD so it’s a bit more serious if it was a UTI as it just might go higher into the kidneys. Best advice I was given was drink to colour of pee. I’m not sure if that helps but seeing a Urologist was a really good thing for me. I see him again in March but now no antibiotics for over 2 years and I’m pleased about that. I drink on average 3 pints of water(warm) plus tea and the odd cup of coffee. Adding lime helps the water go down to and I forgot to say my Urologist said Hiprex makes urine more acidic to prevent bugs growing. so I’ve still got Ecoli but it is held down. I photographed the blood and kept a diary of dates of medication to see if a link and because sometimes I could not see through the blood.

I’ve never been offered Hiprex , but I have bought those over the counter powders you can buy like cystopurin that help to make the urine less acidic . I sometimes wonder if the womb could be putting pressure on my bladder. Always feel some pressure , which is why I take frequent samples up to doctors for checking. It’s getting on my nerves.

GPS. I don’t think can prescribe it.Cranberry is supposed to help too. If I were you I’d ask about seeing a Urologist it can’t do any harm. It’s used in Australia etc a lot. Might be again worth asking GP. I hope they send a sample to lab to make sure the antibiotics prescribed work on the bug. Some don’t!

rabbits65 profile image
rabbits65 in reply to medway-lady

Yes they do send my samples up to the hospital lab. Last week a doctor sent me a text message late into the evening to say she was putting me on a change of antibiotic. I’ve taken the five day course. My bladder often feels so sore with it all going on. Now that I’ve finished that course I suppose I better send up another urine sample for a check.

Try not to worry. You have already been told it is ok so just treat this as having a great GP who just wants to reassure you.

Hi I have had this problem in the past and upto date, it usually clears by its self with cyctitis remedy's but do let your GP follow the proceedure . Drink extra fluids this will help clear any bugs in the system. Obviously if you had a clear result then this will just confirm it havintg another test better safe than sorry.

Hi i've had blood in the urine for around thirty five years. It was investigated and i was told i had reflux in my right kidney years ago.Over the years i have had kidney stones a few times.I have been taking Hipprex known as Methenamine for eighteen months now as i was having a lot of urine infections.Glad to say this med has helped greatly.I had cystoscope to look into my bladder and was relieved to hear all was fine.Try not to worry at least your gp is bothering about you and wants to check things out.
