Hi, I have been on Benepali sine July this year. I have developed rosacea on my face and so called jock itch, an infection near my genitals. I am testing both, one with a cream called Cetaphil, for the face and Daktarin for the genitals itch.I have now gained a violent reaction to coconut and cow's milk. Both engender violent diarrhoea. My specialist sees the first two as necessary side effects. The next two came on suddenly after meals, almost like food poisoning.
Has anyone else noticed a change in dietary intolerance?

sorry I haven’t had any of those as a reaction to Benepali. The best thing to do to start with is keep a strict food diary to see if it is something you are eating or whether it’s something like food poisoning and go from there. Of course you can get all these things without being on Benepali so hopefully the meds will clear them up.
Biological meds make us susceptible to infection, especially of the skin, gums and digestive track. So does meds like sulphasalzine. However we are all different and some of us get more frequent infections than others. Some people have none. Some have skin issues others bowel. Usually the large bowel reacts to infections. I had a severe small bowel infection in 2014 and it flare up now and again. When it does I become lactose intolerant and fructose intolerant. I think our gut microbiome is overwhelmed with baddies. I suggest avoiding the triggers that affect you . I recovered by avoiding sugars and dairy for 3 months , taking prescribed antbiotics and having a plain diet . Nevertheless it flares up from time to time especially since taking Benepali. Sometimes we also have to weigh up risks and benefits too.
Cetaphil is a cleanser (as you’ll know). As an alternative you might try Boots DermaCare Rosacea Treatment Serum which is intended to treat the condition itself. I’m using it myself - Rosacea is an extremely common condition, it seems - to keep the symptoms in check. Personally I’m undecided if it’s right for my rosacea but after using a tube of it, it appears to be preventing any big outbreaks. The alternative I’ve also used is Ivermectin cream, prescribed by the doctor.
I’ve been on benepali 6.5yrs, and never had issues. Although at 47 I went into a very severe flare, which is when I was diagnosed with AS. Turned out I’d had it 25yrs, and had a lot of fusion, from being dismissed as pains due to my career as a nurse.
It coincided with the menopause, and I also suddenly had lots of issues with my stomach. It turned out I had developed lactose intolerance, which apparently is quite common, due to inflammation also being in the gut. 11yr on I still cannot tolerate lactose, even though my inflammation levels are much better.
Yes I’m now allergic to eggs my throat swells and I have violent squits for 24 hours. I also have issues with lactose intolerance but not all the time. Unfortunately you can develop allergies and intolerances to all kinds of things with RA and or meds used to treat them. The only thing I can suggest is to keep a food diary and find out yourself what the triggers are. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be a reason I can’t tolerate too much iron in my diet either so forget spinach etc. it’s trial and error I’ve found. Hope you find a solution.
