Hi all, I have RA , hiatus hernia, a very large cyst in my liver, and a pharyngeal pouch in my throat

my main problem now is I just can’t eat or drink anything at all without being sick after each mouthful, I think it is my pouch

I was supposed to have it done in 2019 , but then I was told not , because my BMI was 31 , and I have put more weight on now, but I don’t understand how when i can’t eat without being sick. Any ideas how I can lose some weight please ?

Plus my liver cyst was drained in February this year, they got over a litre of fluid out , I had a scan 2 weeks ago to see if there was any problems in my tummy area , as to why I’m being sick , and they said no problem other than the cyst has filled up again. The reason I have pain in my back is because of the cyst, so I have to have it cut out next time !

Oh gosh how awful. I swear by Slimming World. Lots of support and you can explain your issues to the consultant. Good luck.

I also had a pharyngeal pouch

I caught pneumonia. I was inhaling food and drink from the pouch into my lungs

I spent 4 weeks in hospital nil by mouth on a Nasal gastro tube . Once the pneumonia was cleared ,I was moved to a different hospital and had the Pharyngeal pouch repaired .

Hope this helps

oh my goodness, I didn’t know that could happen, 4 weeks in hospital, before you got your pouch sorted, was the operation a success ? How long before you were able to eat and drink and recover ? Hope you are better .

How are you feeling now ? And did you keep bringing your food back up all the time ?

Hi Jools

I wasn’t aware to start with that I had a pharyngeal pouch.!

I kept choking on food even though I had chewed it very well.

My gp diagnosed it and I was sent to my local hospital for a repair.Unfortunately they tried to do it via an endoscopic procedure which failed.

Just before Christmas 2018 I was admitted to The RoyalLiverpool hospital with pneumonia when they did investigations including a barium swallow test that is when they found that I was aspirating food and drink into my lungs.from the pouch.

I was put on an NG tube and nil by mouth 2 days before Christmas.

An interesting time!, I was fed and watered via the NG tube until the pneumonia had been resolved which took about two and a half weeks

Once that happened I was transferred to Aintree Hospital ENT department who did the pharyngeal repair via my neck. I still had the NG tube in for a few days more while they checked the repair worked

I am glad to say that everything has been good in that department so far.

I hope this information helps

Regards

Brian

I’m so pleased you are better now , what a horrible time you had with it, I’ve been waiting since 2019 for my operation, they said they would do it, then I got a letter saying my BMI was 31 and it has to be under 30 before they would operate. Now I weigh even more due to mobility issues, even though I don’t get much down 😓

Thank you for taking the time to tell me your story, all the best to you

Kind regards

Julie
