When I started taking sulfasalazine a couple of years ago, my wee became a dark straw coloured and told that was normal.
Two days ago I started having really frequent, very painful wee, sometimes urgent, sometimes a little blood stained, but noticed my wee was no longer dark, sometimes quite pale.
I've had no stomach pain.
I went to GP yesterday who said I very likely had cystitis and was given a 3 day course of the antibiotic Nitrofurantoin. .
I did a sample to be sent off. GP said "Good, it's a normal colour. Wait three or four days and if you hear nothing, no news is good news, and likely cystitis."
So, is it normal for my wee colour to change back to 'normal' while on sulfasalazine?

Yes. Sulphasalazine can change urine colour to orange with some people which is ‘normal’while you take it. If you drink plenty you dilute your urine and as you’ve likely had cystitis you’ll have been drinking to flush your bladder and that’ll turn urine a lighter colour. You might find, when the infection’s over and after the antibiotics, you go back to peeing orange coloured urine which is also normal. Nothing to worry about.
thanks, last day tomorrow. I do drink plenty of water anyway, day and night. Maybe I had been drinking more than I realised (although today has been lot less than I normally do)
I was on Sulphasalazine for 8 years and urine was always orange…. Stopped taking it 2 weeks ago ( changing meds) and urine back to normal colour within a week.
why did you stop taking it, did it stop working? I’ve been on it nearly a year in combination with Hydroxychloroquine and went into remission. I was told to drop the hydroxychloroquine a bit and I’ve got symptoms again. Increased my dose a month ago and still have pain. So I don’t know if the sulfasalazine has stopped working?
It worked well for me but have developed erosive oral lichen planus which is very unpleasant and difficult to treat. It’s possible that sulphasalazine is the cause so requested to change back to methotrexate. It’s a very recent change so hopefully awaiting outcome.. it does feel a bit better but that’s subjective.
I was on hydrox for years by consultant stopped it because of potential eye probs(he’s quite risk adverse)…prob a good thing!
I’ve been on sulphasalazine for years and my wee is a normal colour. Mine’s only dark first thing which is what you expect. Hope you’re well again soon
I have lucazade wee first thing then back to normal during the day! Frightened myself after a barrocca vitamin drink as wee was neon green doc thought it was hilarious!
