Hi

Has anyone got a disabled person's railcard on the basis of having RA? I read somewhere they had expanded their eligibility and it was meant to be wider than the conditions listed on the website. I heard you could get an exception by contacting them. A friend with ME got a railcard by phoning them and providing diagnosis info by letter.

I did the same only to get a standardised reply saying RA is not on their list of conditions.

Anyone know any different?

Not for just having RA, it has eligibility criteria on the website. I doubt having RA would ever qualify you as it affects everyone differently but if you get some parts of pip or attendance allowance then that can qualify you.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm aware of the list on their website. My point is that I read in the news that they were making exceptions outside of that list as people pointed out it's far too narrow in terms of 'disability'. Friend doesn't receive PIP or have blue badge and got her card on medical evidence but they turned me down. Seems they are taking contradictory actions.

I'll try them again and report back if any success!

did you send medical evidence of your disability with your application?

I did. I sent a letter from my consultant which is what they asked me to send when I spoke to them on the 'phone. Seems strange that they ask me to send it, because it implies they do consider medical evidence, only for them to then send a standard reply saying, you're not on our eligibility list...

I had a disabled railcard before the pandemic. I provided evidence from my PIP award, it was all very straight forward after that.

I have a DRC. I get PIP so maybe that makes a difference. I also have a BLUE BADGE.

bizarrely I get a disabled rail card, for needing bilateral hearing aids, when in fact my AS is more disabling. My hearing without aids is classed as profoundly deaf, but I manage well with aids, so seems a strange concept. Their list does seem limited.

I have a disabled rail card but then again I do receive PIP and my mobility is very restricted. As others have said try calling them and speaking to someone and ask if you could send medical evidence. I use the train once in a while but it’s still worth the £50+ for 3 years. I generally use it for longer journeys and my husband as my carer gets the discount too. To be honest there are lots of different railcards. If you have a disabled bus pass then this may help as evidence too. Good luck let us know how you get on.

I got mine when I got pip I just had to screenshot my letter if I remember correctly

I don't but I am eligible for a rail card as I have a hearing aid, not everyone who wears one is aware that this makes them eligible for a card. Probably not very helpful for you but I thought I would just throw that in there.

Yes you can get a Disabled Railcard with Rheumatoid Arthritis, but I would recommend sending in your PIP award letter as that’s what gave me the eligibility.
