Can't straighten finger

wilbertjellyfish profile image

Morning guys,Hope you are all enjoying Easter.

Quick question

I've woken unable to straighten middle finger, right hand. Not planning on needing it for rude gestures but it would likely be useful for more mundane tasks. Any tips on getting it to work again?

It's painful along the Palmer aspect so I'm thinking it's inflammation of the tendon or something??

Thanks.

I’ve had similar with a lot of burning pain . Tendonitis. Steroid injections into sheath of tendon help me. Try looking up trigger finger. I’d seek medical advice as soon as you are able.

Trigger finger. Feel along the palm and if you find a small bump/lump on the tendon coming from that finger try massaging gently with an anti-inflammatory gel as a short term solution. But go see you doctor for a steroid injection into it. I’ve had trigger fingers on both hands sorted with injections.

Hel you've sorted my middle finger out I did t have any idea I had trigger finger as well as what's going in with me right now I can't thank you enough I did the massage and it went back to normal but didn't last long before it went back to bent again so I went on you tube and found some good exercise that should help whilst I wait for my appointment . Thank you any sort of relief is a massive help right now ❣️

you’re welcome.

I had to massage mine several times a day, but eventually had a steroid injection to fix it more permanently. Thatvwas about 5 months ago, and still straight!

Hi wjf. It does sound like trigger finger. I had it on my r/h middle finger for some time before the ring finger became affected. Steroid injections didn't work for me so I had to have surgery which worked brilliantly. I would see your GP about it before it gets any worse as early treatment will probably prevent the need for surgery (if, of course, that's what the problem is). Good luck.

Thanks. I'll ring GP tomorrow they likely won't do it so I'll let rheumys know too. Hopefully can avoid surgery. Can't afford the time off work... although won't be able to o operate as things are either. 🙈😂

That really is awkward for you. You could try the massage for now and maybe wear a splint or brace on it if you have access to any. If not, maybe the GP can help with that.

I texted my GP friend, apparently here in NI GPs don't inject. I'm trying the massage and some gel and heat. Fingers crossed, if not will see rheumy nurses.

Good luck, I hope the massage works for you. 🤞

try a good massage in a bowl of very hot water , I’m sure you’ve probably tried this though. !!! I have results with heat often.

My fingers flare like this occasionally. Normal service resumes after a few days.

I can't even get it straightened but I'm going to see someone with a Lazer tomorrow...it might help.

I had this and it's indeed very painful - I remember bashing the stuck out finger on the steering wheel and it really made me screech ... I put up with it for some months (it's possible it will straighten by the end of the day but will be back to sticking out next morning). Eventually I showed it as an appointment with the rheumatologist and he laughed, said 'well, that's easily fixed'. Quick injection into the palm of my hand was all it took, that's 10 years ago and it's been fine since. So definitely worth asking.
