I have, a couple of times, had my index finger lock bent while knitting and while driving. Is this a common thing with RA? or just with me? It's a bit scary for me.

Locked finger
Mine is my left middle finger... it does it a few times a week, only lasting a few seconds each time but it is quite painful when it does it and I’m never expecting it, so it’s like I go to reach out to open a cupboard door and POW my finger jams. I made a lady jump in Tesco once as I went to open the freezer door and it happened and I said ow so loudly 😂 she looked at me like I was crazy!
It also happens when I’ve fallen asleep on sofa and wake up with a dead hand occasionally. Mostly have been able to hold the middle joint and kind of wiggle it and get it to release.
I assume it’s inflammation in that joint but I have other sorer joints So I don’t know why it’s always that finger... it’s not even my most sausagy finger 😂 the index finger on the other hand is always fatter /more swollen than the left...
Gives us plenty to wonder about this condition doesn’t it!!!!
Hope yours doesn’t do it too often

Sounds like trigger finger. People with RA do get it more often than others, but it’s pretty common. My OH has it. He has an anti-inflammatory cream that he massages into the base of that finger, which seems to have helped a bit.
If it really bugs you talk to your GP about getting a steroid injection. There is a surgical treatment for severe cases, but probably as rare as hen’s teeth on the NHS now.
I had it for a week or two. That was a year or more ago and nothing since. Hopefully the same will happen with you. If it persists you could try taking a temporary break from knitting.
That's lousy! I get trigger finger too. In my case it's the ring finger on both hands and mostly happens when out shopping. I was told it was probably over-extension when pushing the trolley. That flash of white-hot pain is not nice is it? The OT has given me a splint to wear for 6 hours a day and overnight for one wrist and a resting splint for the other just overnight. Not the most glamorous look for bedtime but never mind, they help. As a keen knitter, I find that it keeps my hands moving and the fingers and hands hurt more if I don't but each to their own. Wishing you well
Hi, I also had trigger finger of my right ring finger. My gp gave me a steroid injection into the finger over a year ago. It took a few weeks to work but I have had no further trouble with it. It maybe a question to ask your gp if it would be suitable for you!
I've had it for nearly two years now and had many steroid injections in my fingers. I saw the orthopaedic surgeon a month ago and have been given a splint to wear overnight for 6weeks. When I see him again he will decide if he is going to do release of tendons on left middle and ring fingers. Can't say the splint has done any good so far, still painful and triggering. Hope yours improves soon. X
