I have Ra and I’m on pip but I also get carers allowance for my autistic son but I’m at retirement age in September and because of getting my pension I’m no longer entitled to carers allowance I was wondering if anybody has applied for carers addition or carer premium .? And what is the criteria .i still have to care for my son even though I’m in pain sometimes but he still needs care . Any advise would be great x

Have a look at this, it is a simulator to show what things you might be eligible for and explain the criteria more

Have you thought of having a word with the CAB…..they have specialists who will be able to advise you.

Age UK is very good when it comes to benefits. Scope also have a helpline you could try. Found the below from a ‘quick look’, but I would double check everything; ‘might’ and ‘could’ leave things open…

“What you might get if you get your State Pension.

If your State Pension is more than the Carer's Allowance amount of £69.70 you might not be paid any Carer's Allowance. However, a successful Carer's Allowance claim will still give you an 'underlying entitlement' to it. This entitlement could mean you get extra money with any means-tested benefits you claim, such as Pension Credit or Housing Benefit.”

Also. I would look into whether he can now get ‘Severe Disability Premium’ instead (if he is in receipt of ESA). * he would need to live alone, or with other people on PIP…. Again. Please double check this.

My mum in law gets carers allowance for my father in law and she’s in her 80’s and so is he. She gets her pension too. However she is disabled herself and receives mobility allowance so perhaps that’s why she qualifies. It’s a bit of a minefield and they don’t make it easy but I’m sure you should be able to claim for something or barring that you could claim on behalf of your son as he still needs ongoing care. As others have said maybe get in touch with CAB.
