It's somewhat dependent on who recommended it & if they are sure of it being appropriate for you. Really, no different to any other supplement it's best to ask for your Rheumy's considered advice.
I have found this, if it's of any help versusarthritis.org/about-a...
I have bone density loss but don't take anything other than prescribed supplements/vitamin for it. That said I’ve not investigated other options either. I hope you get the answers you need.
I have looked at them, but they are expensive is they don't work, Look forward to see what everyone says about these.xxxxx
As a general rule one should never mix anything with prescription drugs so I’m afraid we can’t advise you on that …..just try to get in touch with your Rheumatology nurse. … she is the only one who knows your clinical history and could advise you.
I’m surprised if this was recommended by a medic. I would have thought your rheumatologist would either prescribe calcium & vitamin D tablets, or biposphonates depending on what your T score is. Do you have osteopenia or osteoporosis?. Personally I wouldn’t waste my money when there are options for free on the nhs.
Thank you for your reply, I am taking vitamin D Alendronic acid did not agree with me, and haven’t been offered calcium so will ask at next appointment 🥰 Thank you
I couldn’t tolerate alendronic acid either so tried risedronic acid, same issues but maybe it would be ok for you. I'm not on any bisphosphonate now, even though my GP requested one which is an IV infusion my Rheumy refused on the grounds the side effects I experienced on the 2 oral ones would be the same or increased with the infusion. Otherwise I’m prescribed Adcal-D3, a calcium & Vit D chewable tablet twice daily & I increased my dairy intake on the advice of my Rheumy.
Hi Doughnut61 , I don't know about the links between collagen and bone density, but if you're keen to try it and unsure about taking supplements, maybe another approach could be to increase food sources instead? If you eat animal-based foods, stock made with bones would be a good source of collagen. From the small amount of reading I've done I believe vitamin C is an important element for collagen production, so including plenty of vit C-rich foods in your diet may be beneficial too. Sorry not to be more help! Hopefully your rheumatology team will be able to give you a clear answer on the supplements.
Morning. Vitamin D & Calcium were recommended to me by my Rheumatology Nurse (I have osteopenia and am also 50+). Also, maybe increase your calcium intake, at least half a pint of milk a day, as well as yoghurt and cheese. Vit D helps with the absorption of Calcium.I take a multi vitamin and omega/ collagen every day (Seven Seas Women's 50+) to ensure I’m not missing out on trace minerals etc. And an extra B12 to be on the safe side…
