I haven't. However I know it can help increase bone mineral density. Your doctor might think you need it for this. I eat a healthy balanced diet with plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables, and always cook from fresh which should provide all the vitamins and minerals I need.I eat the minimum of processed foods, and have always been a healthy BMI. BMD is often improved by exercise, plenty of protein in your diet and foods containing vitamin C. I think supplements are only needed if medical tests and symptoms show a deficiency .

I presume you mean collagen? I have been on steroids for years, and my skin is very fragile. I was advised to try collagen for the skin, as I constantly experience skin tears. My skin has improved considerably since starting it 3 months ago

Very interesting! My skin tears easily, especially around fingernails and it is painful. Which one are you using? I need to get it down me. Thanks

Hi Runrig, I have been looking at collagen supplements and it's seems a maze with various strengths and add-ons. Most seem to include hyaluronic acid, is this included in the ones you are taking as you seem happy with yours ? Do you take a specific level, eg I see some are collagen 1, or 2 or some don't specify a number. Interested as hubby has skin tears and fragile skin due to years of steroids. Many thanks, Joy

Hi, mine doesn’t contain hyaluronic acid. I purchase them from Amazon. It costs £20 for 2 month supply, but they have 28% off at the moment. The research is mixed on whether it helps. Some studies show good results, others report little benefit. However my skin has improved considerably l, my hands are no longer all wrinkly, and now when I knock myself, it rarely tears now.

I take it daily re osteopenia & the Rheumy thinks it’s a good idea, do your research as collagen 2 is better for bones, where as others are good for hair, nails & skin, you can get a combination with all of them in so your covered in all areas which could be more convenient, I think it’s great your Rheumy has suggested it.

Interesting too! Which one are you taking for your Bones/Osteopenia? Thanks

Hi, this sounds really interesting but am confused with all the various types and strengths. Hubby about to have a Zolendronic acid infusion for his bones, so I'll check with the rheumy team if ok to take collagen with it. But he also has thinning skin ( due to steroids) and tears and wondered which of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 covers several needs. I know we can't offer clinical advice but comments re the experience of taking them for multiple issues (lungs, RA, vasculitis, severe itchy skin issues....) would be helpful. Thank you.

The evidence for extra collagen is not clear but few disadvantages. I found an improvement in skin fragility after about 3 months so I've continued it.
