Good afternoon - Covid Booster

Help please? I have yet to have a booster as I am trying to get the Astra -Zeneca as I recieved this for my two previous but am being told no and that I need a letter to be given this vaccine instead of one of the others.

I currently inject weekly with Abatacept 125mg , Metrotrexate 15mg , plus other meds ie Metformin etc.

Any one had this difficulty or could suggest way forward?

Thanks

Yes. I am at the moment. My GPS are not doing letters so I am going to ask my consultants secretary.

Have you tried phoning around your local vaccination sites asking if anyone is actually using AZ as a third Primary in your area?

I think I read somewhere that AZ was being sent to third world countries because it travels well longer than Pfizer?

When I had my third jab people who asked which vaccine was being used & why ….were told the clinic had no choice…they used what they were sent.

Hope you find some…

Im sure I've read that they are using either Pfizer or Moderna for boosters. If you go on the the following link, put your postcode in and the click on the various vaccinations places it will tell you which vaccination they are offering.

I think that Paula-C is right, all boosters ( or 3rd primarys) are either Phizer or Moderna. Do you have a specific reason for wanting AZ?

Hiya chante. I don't know if this helps, from the NHS site re booster doses.

Most people will be offered a booster dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine or Moderna vaccine.

This means your booster dose may be different from the vaccines you had for your 1st and 2nd doses.

Some people may be offered a booster dose of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine if they cannot have the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine. nhs.uk/conditions/coronavir...

So from that I would take it that the Astra-Zeneca is only available as a booster if you can't have the Pfizer or Moderna for some reason, how strictly that is applied would depend on your reason to want the AZ I'd think. I don't know who'd you'd have to have a letter from saying so though, maybe your Rheumy? Like many here I had the AZ for the first 2 & Pfizer for 3rd primary & the again for the booster. I had no side effects from any, except a sore arm around the injection site for around a week from the AZ, nothing at all from the Pfizer.

I hope it works out as you wish.

I was told I could only have the AZ as was initially thought too sensitive to have others but as I was ok after 2nd one they have said I can have any that is being used. I had 3rdprimary all ok and just took it as I was more concerned about having the 3rd primary than which one.

Maybe talk to RA team about your concerns?

I think that the Pfizer and Moderna are better protection against the omicron variant so unless there is a reason why you should not have those then they are the best choice for the booster.

Routinely only Pfizer and Moderna are given as boosters. This was decided by the gov and experts at the beginning of the booster programme. It is possible to get an AZ booster in theory but not usually straightforward so there has to be a good medical reason.

Many people over the age of 40, including me, had 2 doses of AZ followed by a Pfizer or Moderna booster and in fact some studies show that this combination actually gives better protection.

Yes my son is having this problem. He has serious allergies and was very reluctant to have the vaccine at all but eventually after discussion with his doctor he had Az no problems. He wants a booster but when he went, they only had Pfizer which he refused. Another special appointment was made and still they only offered him Pfizer. Then he got covid and was quite poorly. He’s fine now but he still wants a third AZ just to give him an extra boost and he likes to travel so may need 3 to do that. For some reason it seems very difficult, no idea why it should be!

Hi I had to have Astra Zeneca for my third vaccination as I am on immunotherapy and we do not absorb the full dose so it was said this is classed as a primary dose like the first 2. I also need a fourth booster as well. They have done a study and have said you can mix the 3rd dose with Pfizer or moderna as well and it is safe, but I have to have Astra Zeneca due to having allergic reactions to other medications not associated with covid vaccinations. I had to get a letter from my GP or consultant that explained why I needed the same type of vaccination and had to wait for my vaccination centre to call me when they were getting Astra Zeneca in. Just to confirm they would not give me this without this letter. I hope this helps you.

I was told 119 can tell you where to get different vaccines. I know gloucestershire only has Pfizer and that in Worcestershire you can get moderna, for example.
