Oooh now there's some memories . We had a sweetshop on the way to school and I used to have a penny for sweets everyday. I remember the cigarettes well. And cherry lips, floral gums , Victory V cough sweets 😁

Yes cherry lips and floral gums...those Victory V's numbed the tongue a bit when trying not to crunch them! Flying saucers and a pink spearmint hard toffee that I can't remember the name of but came in an oblong block and looked like a cellular baby blanket. Wonder if anyone remembers or knows the name?

Do you remember Aztec chocolate?

Pippy25 profile image
Pippy25 in reply to Green230461

Vaguely, I think they may have sold it in my school's tuck shop?

I remember Aztec very well. Also because of its unusual name.

I can't recall seeing the toffee you mention.

It's funny as my friends also remember it but can't remember the name.

Sweet tobacco

I loved that too, as well as coltsfoot rock from the chemists, or peas in the pod in my own brown bag in summer when when we called in at the greengrocers on the way home from school.

I can remember getting a twig from the chemist to chew

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Green230461

Licorice root. You can still buy them. I used to regularly as there was a vendor by El Corte Inglés in Alicante sold them in 10's. Chew it till there's no taste left & it looks like something the cat sicked up. 🤢

It took a lot of chewing I remember my jaws aching

When my sister's and I were young, we always got our presents in a pillow case, probably easier for Santa to get down the chimney 🤗. As for sweets I remember spangles, fruit pastels, blackjacks and of course frozen jubblys. Oh and broken biscuits from Woolworths 😁

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to Bazzak

I worked on the biscuit counter at Woolies 😁🤗

Bazzak profile image
Bazzak in reply to MadBunny

You're probably too young to remember selling broken biscuits 😁

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to Bazzak

I was 16 at the time - they did have them well into the 70s 😁

We were given a bag of broken biscuits every Friday by our neighbour who worked at a biscuit factory in town. I passed it on my way home from school. Didn’t like Tuesdays, Custard Cream day, as it smelled revolting. Nothing like they taste, I actually like them.

Welcome.

🤔 Now I'm sure I've seen your name before somewhere 🤔😀 - how are you Baz, nice to hear from you. This is like your very popular post many months ago isn't it and then as now, my favourites were the same as yours, except with the blackjacks, there were the mojos and fruit salads (and others too). 😋

Bazzak in reply to springcross

Just had a re read of his post. I was laughing at the comments about eating cough sweets one after the other, as I've got a cold and have been doing exactly that with a packet of menthol and eucalyptus sweets 😁🤗

springcross profile image
springcross in reply to MadBunny

Is that when he was young? If so, that's probably why he was the milk monitor and had extra milk, he probably wanted to cool his throat down!! 😆 I used to love the Winter Mixture sweets and would eat them one after the other.

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to springcross

It wasnt his comment, it was somebody else's. I loved the winter mixtures as well.

I loved kali, no idea of the spelling, from the corner shop, she tipped into a little bag that came to a point, it turned our tongues and fingers multicoloured.

Yes! Kali, sharper & more powdery than sherbet, a bit fizzy too I seem to remember. Used what you were given to dip, your finger!

Rice paper- yum. I have been known to eat it out of the packet when I've bought it for baking 😁

I knew I wasn't the only one! I use it for the bases of coconut macaroons but have to have some put by when making them for personal use. My h thinks it's odd.

MadBunny profile image
MadBunny in reply to nomoreheels

😁Yes that's what I buy it for.

Green230461 profile image

Rice paper better than the nougat unless it comes from montalemar

Me too!

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Green230461

It's my h who's the Turkish Delight fan in our house, the traditional type, but limits himself being diabetic. The box can be there from one Christmas to the next. Same with his favourite choc, though I’ve bought him 5 more blocks fir Christmas again!

Best nougat from Montelimar. On one of our journeys on the A7 sun route through France we stopped off at Montelimar. Let's just say we came away with more than we arrived with! I also like the Spanish Turrón. The hard type though, can't abide the soft.

Snap! How odd is that? Of all the uses it's for the same one.

Oh I used to absolutely love getting a toy sweet shop at Christmas time, all the little bits to weigh out etc I was just telling my husband about that last week. I remember getting my first watch watch when I must have been about seven and the most out of character gift my mother ever bought me when I was in my teens was a blue long fur fabric cat night dress case which I absolutely loved.

And of course Space hoppers!🤶🏻🎅🏻

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels

Mine was then Play Doh Factory, hours of fun. I was particular with keeping colours separate & putting them in the right colour pot, unlike some friends who ended up with mucky grey Play Doh. Loved the smell too. Another was a space hopper, though as was the norm I didn’t get the popular one with a face, mine had handles which were 4 tubes held together with a plate of plastic. Still, it worked the same & I had lots of fun with it.
