On Friday I went all dizzy and had to sit down at work. I work as a breakfast chef and when the DM came outside to tell me there is a check on and come back to cook breakfast I could not! I couldn't stand up without falling over and when I tried to move my head everything was spinning! Horrible horrible feeling! He had a go at me shouting I had to go back in, I said there is no way I can stand up or even look at you, believe me if I could stand and go back in I would!! He slammed the door after I said can't you or a waitress cook the food, he screamed back NO... So he left me outside in the cold without coming back to see how I was for 20 minutes I could not even go get a coat I was so bad. He said I suppose your going home?? Yes I am when I can move safely. He says you have to clock out, I says I can't move can you clock me out?? I had to ring my partner to come pick me up and walk me back to my flat. But first I somehow managed to get to my locker down a corridor swaying all over the place to get my keys and clothes, there was no help forthcoming from my manager!!!
My partner came and helped me back to my home. As soon as I was home I was throwing up and the dizziness was unreal even with my eyes closed! I rang the doctor and explain what was wrong, he said I can have a telephone call from doctor, so after an hour he rang and explained what had happened he said sounds like a mini stroke! Omg shock I got to see doctor 2 hours later not a stroke! He thinks it mer something disease or some kind of vertigo! I am on anti sickness tablets for a few days. Worse days of my life! I am on holiday in Scotland now and am feeling loads better at the moment. Thanks for listening guys.

The last time I had vertigo was 2002 and I had it for 2 years then it just disappeared! But this is way worse this time, the spinning is worse and being sick! I just don't know when it's going to happen again I am seeing my Ra consultant on 11 th November as I am still getting use to the biological drug and by then it will be 3 months but I am in a constant flare with pain everywhere! Thanks for your reply.
Oh gosh Carol poor you and what a horrible manager!
Did the doctor say he thought it could be Menieres Disease? It's caused by a problem in the inner ear. The symptoms you mention do seem to fit based on what's listed on the NHS website:nhs.uk/conditions/menieres-...
I'm glad to hear you're feeling better and are having a nice break. Hope you can get your condition sorted on your return if it recurs.
Mèniére's Disease possibly Carol? If so my mother in law had it & it can be very disrupting. I won,t say exactly what was suggested for her just in case it's not Mèniére's as it could cause other problems but when we could get her to do it it did help somewhat. Your Duty Manager needs reporting. Certainly needs reminding of his responsibilities in the post. Heartless brute.
Enjoy your break. I hope the antiemetics keep things on an even keel & you're able to do all you've planned.
Oh wow that is awful. If there is HR you need to log this incident as in a kitchen you could have really injured yourself too. Glad on holiday and some meds. Fingers x
Absolutely intolerable reaction from that manager. Glad you got away safely and then also for a holiday. I hope that some suggestions here might help too.. 🤗
Sounds like BPPV vertigo and be careful with the anti sickness pills as they can prolong the attack. It is awful and make sure you sleep a bit more upright too and your GP can do the Eplay manoeuvre on you it moves the inner ear grit and stops it straightaway with luck. The first attack is the worst and don't do anything that makes you spin around for a while. The internet can supply exercises which help.
Sounds exactly like my mum and she was thought to have had a stroke too, it turned out to be labyrinthitis and it did go away but took a while. Enjoy your holiday, sounds like you need it.
That sounds like an awful experience and so sorry you have a heartless manager. It maybe labyrinthitis due to a viral infection. I had 2 bouts of it, last one was when I worked at a preschool in 2017. I remember I was on the bus on my way to work and all of a sudden everything started to spin around as I got off! It lasted like 3 weeks (but it was the first week that was the most intense). It’s scary and extremely unpleasant but if it is that it will go away. Best to cut down on caffeine completely and only use the anti-vertigo medicine when it’s really necessary.
I have very similar symptoms and it seems to happen once or twice a year. My old GP said it was acute labyrinthitis. It is a horrible feeling all I can do when it happens is lie flat and not move my head at all. My GP used to give me prochlorperazine which helped. Hope you don’t have anymore episodes. Enjoy your holiday and take care.
HI, this does sound like labyrinthitis. It can be due to bacterial or viral infections but can also be caused by calcium crystals which move around in the inner ear & stimulate nerve endings . There are medications available which can help & your medical advisor should know about them but also some over-the-counter antihistamines can help.
Read this link as sometimes the effects can be immediate. Again your medical advisor should know about this trick!
Doing the Epley manoeuvres yourself at home can be very successful…I was given the written instructions FOR ME by a vestibial disturbance Physiotherapist who treated me after I was diagnosed by an ENT specialist……as you say the effects can be immediate….but only if it is suitable for the condition you actually have…..as has been said the symptoms can be misconstrued…& if you have themyou should always seek advice.
And please everybody….do NOT attempt this movement until you have been diagnosed by a clinician who is qualified to diagnose which side you should turn your head first,& how long you should hold the position. If you don’t get it quite right you could make the condition far worse.
I’m not saying don’t try it…I would still do it if I had another attack of Labrynthitis…but I would still check with my doctor first.
Your manager behaviour is unacceptable. There is such a thing as dignity at work. I would have a conversation with them to explain how their behaviour made you feel: disrespect, upset and bullied. Good to give them a chance to apologise. Are they aware of your illness? It would be helpful for them to get an idea of what it’s like for you. In particular the fear, pain and anxiety.
If your manager is not responding in an appropriate manner I would seek advice from HR or ACAS.
Was there any witness to the scene? Was this an isolated incident? Out of character ? Or is it something that has happened before?
I am very glad you are away on holiday. It’s better to have these difficult conversations once the heat of the emotions has cooled down.
Enjoy your time away, keep talking to your doctors. Fingers crossed your symptoms get better.
Who needs a bully manager when one already has a horrid illness to content with?
Your manager sounds like a real asshat. I hope there are workplace standards where you are and some recourse from sort of regulatory board, like the employment standards here in Canada. We also have a Workers Compensation board who hears and deals with employers who treat their employees this way. Hopefully you are feeling better and that it is nothing serious. Also, please find new employment as that place sounds extremely toxic and that is definitely not good for your health.
Thank you Scott, he is a pain in the bum the deputy manager! I will be having a good few chosen words with my manager when I get back about the whole incident! I have to say I was made to feel so guilty about going home, but I just could not work! If he is a training manager he should know every job in the place and he could have done my job!!! I think it might be HR I speak to as my manager is fighting for her life with covid in hospital and our area manager has left! And the one about him doesn't care...Thank you for listening everyone. 🙂
No one should have to put up with that. The DM should recognize that one of his employees is ill and take APPROPRIATE action, not blame the ill person. Take care of YOURSELF first, do not worry about work until you are feeling better.
Hope you are feeling a bit better..I know you will find it hard to believe right now….but it does go away completely…..just go easy until all the symptoms have faded.
Thank you all for your lovely replies. My doctor said I don't have an ear infection, but I have extremely blocked ears with wax that I am putting oil in now and hopefully will get them flushed out when I go home! But she stressed that is not the reason I had an episode of dizziness. She mentioned BPPV could be the course and gave me some exercise to do. Take care everyone
After dealing with BPPV myself years ago, I found myself a great old acupuncturist. I stress old because they do not work from a book, but hands on. He cleared a lot of my systems up and I started feeling a lot better. Maybe this could help you as well?
Your boss sounds like a real a""""""e. you want to report him to your company darling. I am glad you are feeling better now. You want to find out what caused these dizzy spells and if it is due to your disease. xxxxx
My episodes of dizziness lasted 12 hours!!! From 8.15 in the morning to 8.15 in the evening! Worse day of my life. Just wanted to put that in. Thanks everyone. I hope no one gets this, one exception would be the DM from my work!
You got off lightly…my first episode lasted a week…I still have the scar where I got out of bed on about day three when I was on my own,& should have stayed put. I fell into a brass framed picture on the wall & cut my forehead! Not a pretty sight…..but as I said…it does go away!
I’m sorry this happened to you. It sounds horrendous and the way your manager treated you was appalling. I’m glad you are enjoying your holiday and hope you don’t get a repeat of your symptoms.
It’s Ménière's disease, I have just had an attack this morning. Several severe dizzy spells followed by being sick. Have now been suffering from it for about 4 years, I can’t lie on my right side at all without bringing it on.
Sometimes a migraine can do that to you as well. What an unsympathetic boss you have. Glad you are feeling better though, I remember having a day like that at work years ago. I was so hot and dizzy I couldn't see and felt extremely sick. Response from my boss, "sometimes we just have to get on with it!!!!'. I was taking care of children and could barely stand! I even felt dizzy sitting down.
It sounds very much like Vertigo. I have it from time to time but not lately thank hid as like you say it is for me the worst feeling ever. I can’t even sit up just fall over sideways constantly vomiting etc. I used to have a GP who did the Epley manoeuvre which is like an instant cure if it works. Sometimes takes a few tries but other times it didn’t work at all. I truly sympathise. Glad it is subsiding for you.
Work well that’s a different matter which definitely needs reporting. What an awful way to behave. Not acceptable at all.
Wow what a great boss you have NOT!As if its not bad enough being frightened by being dizzy you got them attacking you. Why couldn't they cook?
Is their no one you can report them to.
As for being dizzy it can be a number of things, even just not drinking enough. But if is not something you can ignore. I get them quite often bit of a funny blood pressure. They tend to be worse when I've court a bug. I've just had covid and didn't get it so not always the case. ( I feel so much better for having it, its as if I've had a spring clean. 48 years of smoking cleaned lol
Goes without saying you need to see a doctor just to check . And look for a new job if you can..
I had vestibular neuronitis. They thought I had had a stroke but MRIsaid otherwise. It is a problem with crystals in the inner ear. It took a long time to go I’m afraid 😳 Hope they sort you out and as for your manager say DUTY OF CARE!
This is shocking a terrible way for your DM to react I really hope you have forwarded what you have shared with us here to the senior management above him, this needs to be looked into & certainly not over looked!! I’m originally from the same trade & yes the pressures are on at prime service time but this is totally wrong, he has a responsibility of care & welfare for the staff. A safe work space etc... I’m glad your getting treatment etc & also enjoying beautiful Scotland a perfect tonic after your difficult time, take care & keep well, breath that clean Scottish air..
You poor thing. Your boss sounds beyond awful, you need to make a note of times and dates of incidents and any witnesses to his behaviour - that’s just not on. I’m glad you are enjoying your holiday and relaxing, you need that and it will do you good.My husband had an episode similar to what you had. He got up one morning when we were on holiday in our camper and just couldn’t stand up because he felt like he was falling over - all the things you describe. We were meant to be heading off but he couldn’t stand up let alone drive anywhere so I booked us on the site for another couple of days while he got over it and he did but it was pretty frighteningly at the time. He hasn’t had that again since though so hopefully you’ll be ok too.
One time I had one beer at night, when I was 30. I had the dry heaves the next day. My manager would not leave work. All day I had the garbage can next to me and in between clients I lost my cookies. After work was over I went straight to the doctor. He said if I would have lost it anymore I'd be dead. I'm allergic to something in beer and wine. I told my manager and he was much nicer to me from then out as (being an American I could have sued him). I went on to own my own businesses.
Since I have allergies, every once and a while I get vertigo. My ear swells up and I've had to drive myself to the hospital as my husband wouldn't believe me. I'm not married to him anymore and I've learned to use a heating pad when my ear seems to start hurting. That seems to allievate the allergy reaction.
