Firstly I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who responded with tea, sympathy and tips when I first posted about breaking my shoulder. It really was so kind of everyone to take the time to add something and lovely to see so many names I’ve not seen before.
I’m going for my first physio tomorrow and have to say things are so much better now. 🎉🤞
At the follow-up appointment I had an X-ray and phone call the next day to say it was healing well, so no other intervention would be needed, just physio.
Once past the two-week mark I was able to get on top of the pain and occasionally ease my arm out of the sling - mainly to relieve the ‘pull’ on the back of my neck. By then all the bruising was out in all its glory!
Week 3 I was leaving the sling off more and more and gingerly using that arm as and when I could, guided by the “ouch” moment - as soon as it hurt I stopped what I was doing! I also dropped a dose of painkillers per day but have kept on with the morphine patches. I stopped using the sling at night completely.
I’ve thankfully reached a stage now where I can slide down the pillows a bit and sleep more comfortably. Yesterday I even managed to brush my hair first thing in the morning but by the evening my shoulder was having none of it! Last night I was able to use a knife and cut a steak, so every day there’s something new.
I’ve been out a couple of times and worn my sling each time - I’m terrified of some busy person barging past and knocking my shoulder and I’m hoping the sling’s a visual clue to give me a wide berth!
When I spoke to the physio over the phone she asked what my goals were, made a note of them and then stressed that they were just that, goals and not all of them would be achievable which I guess is realistic.
I’ve noticed a shift in my thinking too...instead of looking ahead and thinking ‘however will I manage’ I’m looking back thinking ‘well that was a stupid thing to happen, be more alert’!! Somewhere about the beginning of week 3 I turned a corner and I put that down to literally taking to my bed and doing nothing up to that point except rest and sleep, as in my world they make just about everything get better quicker.

Great newsMM🎈🎉! Physios are the best! Haven’t broken mine, but I have had Frozen Shoulder in each side and they got me through with 100% recovery on the left side and 97% on the right.
It’s a process. Do the work. Don’t overwork to get there faster! All the best!🍀🌻🌸
I am so pleased that your getting on well and coping brilliantly. You’ve come on a long way from when you first wrote . All the very best to you and may your progress continue even further . 💕. 😊 🌞
You are very strong that’s for sure and well done so far on your shoulder rehabilitation. I hope there is much less ouch and glad you can position yourself better on your pillows. x
So sorry to have missed that bit of news when you posted it but it’s wonderful to hear how you have progressed. Wise Physio too!
I set myself goals too, recovering from anything, and don’t stress if I can’t make it. I just reduce the goal till it’s reachable before setting it a bit further again.
Sounds like you are doing very well. The only bone I ever broke was the cuboid in my foot! RA causes me loads of vicious pain in my shoulder-clavicle joint when not adequately controlled. The thought of breaking the bone/s there conjures up very nasty imaginings of severe pains.
I hope you continue to recover well without anyone bumping you, or other mishaps. 💐
Glad things have turned a corner for you Miss Minto and hope with some physio things improve further for you. It sounds like it's been tough but you have shown your strength and determination and by resting too you've given it every best chance to heal. Take care xx
