Different brands of Methotrexate

Hi all you experienced methotrexate warriors. I am preparing for my telephone rheumy appt tomorrow. My biologic is CIMZIA but it was not effective and so my rheumy added 15mg. methotrexate by injection. He prescribed for the first 3 months and I was given metoject and it worked marvellously with my inflammation levels going right down. After 3 months, my GP took over the prescription and he prescribed Nordimet. Immediately, my inflammation levels went back up as did all the pain and swelling of course. Has anyone had any experience of different brands of methotrexate working better or worse for them or is it just a coincidence, do you think? All comments appreciated.

I have always used nordimet. When I was prescribed MTX injections I was given a choice of which device I wanted to use the actual medication is the same just a different way of delivery. This was what my nurse said .

Oh pity, that means that the MTX is not working so back to the drawing board again. Thank you for responding.

Am the same prescribe the Metoject pen, 20mg and its working brill. I will say when i took Mtx orally i was given different brands which i felt werent as effective than others. One brand was really good and the other was not. I use to write on my prescription the type i preferred, they always tried to give me what i asked for.

hi wobbies after changing from oral MTX I've been on metoject for about 20 months now, works very well 😉

if you are in the u.k. you can ask for a specific brand of medicine if you can evidence that it works better. it may actually be that it’s the injector that works better with metoject. having been on a few different injections it always strikes me that they thought about building that one for those of us with hand issues

I’m also on 20mg and finds it works well- just let your consultant know all details and they will sort it I’m sure- all the best

So pleased that your rheumy team are going to ensure you get the metoject form of MTX. I was on the metoject when I was on MTX. Never even thought of the brand making a difference but makes sense as we react differently to different brands of tablets don’t we. I hope you don’t have to wait long for the metoject and it settles things quickly for you xx

Thanks for that. Am really hoping that it will work as I can't bear to go through another change of meds with all the waiting to see if it works and what the side effects are. Still, have that steroid shot on offer so if needs be I will get that and hopefully that can help me to get through to my f2f appointment in 3 months. Must not be pessimistic. xx

Are you still on Cimzia? I had the same situation but the methotrexate dose did little to help so we switched away from cimzia

Yes I am still on Cimzia but it has never worked, so expect at my next consultation to get that changed. Do you mind telling me what you have instead of Cimzia?
