Good morning. I have been on two biological type drugs and both give caution to chicken pox/shingles contacts. You must speak with your healthcare professional re your situation as you might need to start anti viral medication. I believe if you catch this pox virus you can be very very ill. Take care.
Please take advice from your rheumatology team as they know your personal situation. However if it is slightly reassuring when my son had chickenpox a few years a go my rheumatologist told me that as long I was sure that I had had chickenpox as a child (which I had) not to worry. I was on Rituximab, a different sort of biologic.
Stop your medication and start anti virals ASAP . It doesn’t help it is a bank holiday but try to get to a walk-in centre . Time is important you don’t want shingles. Contact nras for advice as you won’t be able to talk to your clinic . X
You can’t get shingles from chicken pox. (Although you can give someone chicken pox if you have shingles). Strange since it’s the same virus but that’s how it works.
Have you had chicken pox before? If so there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be fine. But since you can actually get chicken pox twice if you didn't build up antibodies the first time then best to play safe.
Contact your health team as soon as you can to discuss whether you need to get prophylactic anti-virals. In the meantime try to limit big hugs, do lots of hand washing, and if your little one is coughing and sneezing then wear a mask. She can be contagious even if no obvious blisters.
I had a blood test done to see if I'd had chicken pox before I started enbrel. To my surprise I've had it, I've got antibodies. I can't remember ever having it, it must of been a one spot wonder. Your best to contact your specialist nurses for advice.
Hope your daughters feeling better soon. Both my daughters had it really bad, I had to call the doctor out, I remember telling him I'd never had it...his reply was...well my dear if you haven't had it your going to get it now.
It was part of the screening before I started enbrel, had loads of blood taken, in fact I went twice to have bloods taken. I had a T spot test done, nurse told me they had to take a lot of blood for that test, so that was taken on a separate occasion, Hospital only took bloods one day a month for that because a man in a van came once a month to pick the bloods up, it was tested in Oxford if I remember right.
My husband developed shingles recently. He was told that he could not give others shingles but could give me chicken pox. So told to wash on separate towel stay away from me no hugs or kisses and I was given antiviral tablets too. So speak with your rheummy or GP the doctor gave me tablets. Best of luck.
As Helix says, even if you have had chicken pox, you can get it again. My son had it twice, once when he was five and then again when he was twelve, so there were only seven years between them. We were surprised and so was the doctor. We were told that if a person gets it twice then it is usually because one of the cases was very light, but in my son's case, he had it badly both times. So all I am saying is that you need to be very careful and get advice and treatment asap and not wait until after the bank holiday.
Hi All, Thanks so much for all ur replies, advice and experience.
I had them as a child i forgot to mention but see the comments on some getting them twice!?
As u all pointed out its a bank holiday so im expecting word tmrw.
In the mean time my husband is doing much for the caring...its a real struggle not being able to cuddle her, she is just 18mts...have no idea where she got them as she hasnt seen anyome bar us since christmas.
If your daughter has had no outside contact, are you sure it’s chickenpox? A guide to other possible rashes in children: nidirect.gov.uk/conditions/...
Might be worth getting a medical opinion on it, if you haven’t already.
