AZ Vaccine

Hi all,

Had my AZ jab on the 11/03/21, had to query this with my consultant as I’m on Rituximab infusion.

No pain with jab on the day except bump on arm but around 9pm started getting hot and cold went to bed and that’s when it really hit me.

Very hot almost feverish along with feeling cold and perhaps delirious to a point as my daughter said I was talking to myself most of the night.

Fast forward to beginning of this week, I have a cough and some pain in left leg behind the knee.

Not sure if the jab has caused this either.

Anyone else had any effects specifically from AZ vaccine ?

It could have been the jab as if you already unknowingly had covid you get more of a response to the hab.It could be you unknowingly were developing covid on the day of the jab.

Or it could be another illness.

Either way I'd chat to the doctors . The effects if the jab can take a week to settle down, most people on the AZ get child shivers shakes for 3/4 days as your body mounts a response against covid. I think how I'll would I have been if this is a small dead amount of covid!

But chat to doctor.

Yes I had a very nasty reaction to the AZ vaccination... so much so my rheumatologist has advised I don’t have the booster ...so I should have a word with your consultant if I were you!I had a negative covid test & I’m OK now...but I was really poorly with terrible headaches for about three weeks.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I hope you have made a full recovery?

I’m feeling alright now...but Unfortunately I won’t know until I have finished having tests ..but if they don’t show what is expected ..I will be on a mission to find out how I can travel with just a negative covid test & no second vaccination.

Maybe you have to have a Covid test each time you travel?

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to Neonkittie17

Yes .....then one when you arrive overseas...then another a week after you arrive ...then one before you leave to come home.......all with the uncertainty the test will be done on time......& so it will go on!

I think unless something simpler can be thought of...I will give up on travelling this year.....especially as most countries seem to have less of a grip on the situation than we do.... my friends in the US can fly all over....as long as they wear a mask.Go figure that!

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to AgedCrone

I figure a lot of Americans I know aren’t too bothered about the travelling risk if they’re healthy, from what I see and hear from friends telling me who live there. I’ve mostly friends who don’t want to go anywhere as yet and prefer to wait and see re intentional holidays.

Maybe next time/year the monoclonal antibody injections may be an option, although I am not sure how effective in comparison to the vaccines they are in terms of prevention. I have mostly read about their use once someone had the virus to stop it getting worse.

Maybe the Cornish Riviera might be an option for you this year? However I think my favourite county (apart from my own!) will get overrun with holiday makers this year so we won’t go there. First time not to go in many many years.

No way will I go away in this country...I am called the rainmaker by my friends ...whenever I have been to a coastal resort in the UK it has poured every day!I live in a beautiful part of the country where people actually come for their holidays, but with restaurants ,hotels & all entertainment closed..I doubt they will be coming this year.I’m moving soon....so will no doubt be fully occupied wandering around the garden centres buying plants!

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to AgedCrone

😆 No, don’t do any raindances either! I’m happy to be in my garden this year again which is a very decent size and keeps me/us busy so not going on any UK holidays just yet. I’ll be on the moors with my sketchbook hopefully soon. We are close to wonderful open moors (think Heathcliffe) so you don’t tend to come across too many people where we go. Hope all goes well for your move.

There are a lot of reports now coming out that the second AZ doesnt cause any symptoms, unlike the Pfizer where the data shows second one can give more symptoms post jab.

Hi Allanah, do you mind me asking where you read about Pfizer causing more side effects with the second jab? I suffered a horrible flare after first jab - I happened to be talking to my GP and said I am not going to have second dose and was told the second jab causes far less side effects than the first. Mind you as the saying goes, 'she would say that wouldn't she'!!😂

allanah profile image
allanah in reply to Dobcross1

Yes I saw it on a tv chanel but it's still not SEVERE and doesnt cause death or severe illness. They were discussing the fact that " priming " eg getting a first dose or vaccine after having covid can in some cases make the body produce more symptoms as the body mounts actually good immune response. So with second jabs the body recognises the virus and sets up a fighting immune response. It was noted more symptoms in pfizer than second dose than AZ.

I agree with your gp that feeling rough and not dying is still better than a flare or symptoms from the vaccine. What would you have been like with real covid if this is you from a small dead dose!!!

Everyone is different and these were just from general data . I would definitely have the second dose for so many reasons , one it adds longevity to how long vaccines last in general, and more protection to the initial vaccine ; second more and more travel and insurance etc will ask for vaccine certificates . You can be prepared this time with painkillers etc and it will probably be fine ! Didnt mean to worry you and I dont believe flare of RA is one of the recognised side effects of any vaccine so you should ask the gp to report it , it could well have been coincidence as if you are stressed or anxious ie having a jab you might flare?

Side effects that are noted are sore arm, chills, fatigue, headache, which you get with lots of drugs/ vaccines. Look at the side effects page of paracetamol!😃

Thanks Allanah. I haven't had a flare for 10 months now but maybe it was just coincidence. Still making my mind up!!

You gotta go for it, a few days pain for long term gain ?? If your doc agrees !

Hi lovely I had the Pfizer and I was unwell for about a week and my joints were bad esp my left knee which is on its way out, due to RA ,had the whole chibang all the syptoms

But I spoke to RA nurses who says everyone is different and do not miss my meds out just take them when i felt better. But my local pharmacist who is brilliant said it's a no brainer ,if you have an autoimmune disease its bown to effect you when responding to the vaccine as your immune system has risen up against the vaccine, so for me my flair was definitely caused by the vaccine, but it settled and a small price to pay. And I'm definitely getting my second jab infact I cant wait . Xxxxx

Thanks Denise, it's so good to hear other's experiences. My friend spoke to a nurse about me who said exactly what your pharmacist said. I'm still deciding re 2nd dose but hope yours goes well and fingers crossed no adverse reaction this time!

Thanks ,I'm kinda of expecting it but if I dont get one it will be a bonus. Pharmacist also said that my body has mounted a huge response to the vaccine so hopefully I've some level of protection although there is no way of knowing. You take care xx

I had a bad reaction with inflammation and pain in the joints. I was told that the vaccine boosted the antibodies that I already had from having severe covid in January, which lead to the increase inflammation all round. Seeing consultant tomorrow so will ask about the booster. Hope you feel better soon x

allanah profile image
allanah in reply to Ms-D

Yes that been well reported, again as you have in effect been primed on the first natural acquisition of covid

Ms-D profile image
Ms-D in reply to allanah

I am all too aware how dangerous it can get but having the vaccine was meant to be a good thing until the inflammation kicked in ten fold. Apparently not as much research done into how it affects people with an auto immune disease. Anyway how are you?

allanah profile image
allanah in reply to Ms-D

Lol, well as I say better than real covid😂I'm on second lot of antibiotics for kidney infection and waiting on orthopaedic referral for my knee but I dont think i should hold my breath on that one , do you lol ! Thanks for asking xxx are you doing ok now?

Ms-D in reply to allanah

I am okay but annoyed my face to face for tomorrow git cancelled. Won't see her till May now. I am annoyed as hands are so painful and don't want to keep taking steroids. Got lots of hair shedding too and nothing is working. This covid is having a proper laugh. I want it to just go away so I can get on with life. Pretty much everyone's dream right now.

in reply to Ms-D

Noooooo.. bloody hell !!!!. It’s getting beyond a joke for so many. I’ve done the NRAS survey it asks about cancellation and postponed appointments. Well worth doing x

Ms-D profile image
Ms-D in reply to

Thank you. Will look into it. Just flipping annoyed. How are you doing?

in reply to Ms-D

I would be flippin annoyed too... RA is good small flare with fatigue today but yesterday had my first test and it knocked me about a bit . Need another test but can’t have that until May as there is a waiting list and this is private. If it was on the nhs it would be over 16 months waiting list . A sign of things to come I fear. X

As many have said already I had an unpleasant reaction to the AZ jab. Hot/cold, headache, aches and pains plus fatigue. Nearly a month on and most symptoms have subsided but the RD has made it's unwelcome presence felt with previously unaffected joints sore and with some tendon involvement. It's made me wonder how awful Covid would have been

3LittleBirds2 profile image
3LittleBirds2 in reply to Gnarli

I felt the same, I was fine until about 9pm on the evening I had it then the shivers started, I tookparacetamol and slept.

I woke up around 6am freezing cold but with a very hot face, I'm used to get steroid flushes and side effects from Rituximab but this felt very different, I was wiped out for the whole day. I did feel better the day after but I would say it took about 2 weeks to feel "normal" whatever that is 😂

I didn't have much pain in my arm though, I know people who have sailed through having it done but then others like us who have had side effects, I still do feel extra tired though but not sure if that is down to something else.

Best wishes to everyone x

Yes and yes, I chased a cat, I don't have around my house.. it was intense! Also seem to be suffering a flare now and haven't been able to get on top it since the jab.

Hi Zimmie , I had my jab six weeks ago and the after symptoms were like mild flu combined with an R A joint flare last 48 hours . I then had a gap of 24 hours and came down with mild pneumonia and pleurisy. I think I must have been heading for an infection rather than the vaccination causing it. I was given a COvid test to rule that out and it was negative. It's taking time to recover but hopefully with the spring sunshine and the amount of hours of daylight getting longer I'm hoping it will speed things up a bit.

The RA though has really gathered it's strength so I'm only imagining how awful Covid would have been if I had caught it.

I hope you feel better soon .
