It looks a lot brighter in real life and longer. The nurse who did my blood test said it was a splinter haemorrhage. I only noticed it because I was admiring my nice nail varnish and it had suddenly appeared since I painted them yesterday. I might have been tempted to ignore it but I had something similar on my right little toe a few weeks ago. I also seem to have the beginnings of what looks like fungal infection on the side of my big toe. Why?? I thought it was for people always in trainers and changing rooms...
Is this all methotrexate related?
BTW the strange shape of the nail is due to an onion cutting incident!

It could well be as the nurse says. I know a danger one is a long line behind the nail. So I'm glad you showed it to the team but if you are still concerned go to your gp
Very very unusually a long straight line under the mail us something to deal with. But the small splinter you have should be checked for growth xx if worried though go to gp. I get these and they disappear but that's just me.
I had a black mark in my middle toe nail covering about a third of it which was more square and I suspected it was as I was wearing some larger shoes to accommodate my puffy ankle in the summer of 2018 .. that heatwave summer! It meant my toes were slipping up and down in the front of the shoe. It hurt too so I showed the doc and she said go see the dermatologist to be sure. As I was on a biologic med etc. The rheumy said yes when I asked if it was micro trauma of the nail and he said it was friction and bruising and looked at it with his magnifying lamps. Always best to check. It faded and then grew after three months. Rheumy nurse at infusion always checks for black likes at infusion on your fingernails. xx
Yes, I wondered if the other ones on my toenail were to do with pressure inside shoes when running, which is why I ignored it. Not so sure now. the nurse sais I should mention it to rheumatology.
on my little toe, it was nearer the edge and there were at least 2 (I noticed them when I was trimming the nail) they were darker, less 'fresh' looking and the were gone once I cut the nail.
it is a long line going towards free edge of the nail - it's a milky pink nail varnish so it's a bit difficult to see on the picture. ugggh - another thing to worry about.
Hiya. Don't get me wrong Methotrexate has been great for me - but my goodness it comes with some surprises!! I had fungal nails on both big toes out of the blue... and my nails (and skin on my face) are in a bit of a pickle. Never mind other side effects which Rheumatology dept deny but I didn't have before🤣😂 such as sweating, rashes etc. Nevertheless I'm putting up and shutting up because my RA is so much better. So, I guess what I'm saying is is could be Methotrexate related... sorry this is not much use.
Yes it affects my nails to have one fingernail Abe two toenails that are fungal looking. All since RA started
Not medically qualified, but definitely looks like a small splinter haemorrhage to me. I get them regularly and have done for many years: they are a known minor feature of several types of inflammatory arthritis including both R.A. and PsA, but can also occur in people without arthritis regardless. Not trying to be funny, but why don’t you trust the nurse’s diagnosis of it?
The fungal toe infection could be as a result of being on mtx and it lowering your immune system slightly, but it is also one of those things that can happen to absolutely anyone at any time - the idea it only effects people who wear trainers and go to the pool/gym etc. is a misnomer. See if you can get your hands on something like daktarin cream available over the counter: I was prescribed it by the gp when I had an issue between two toes years back. It’s very effective for fungal problems.
I do trust the nurse, I just wondered what the cause could be - she didn't know. Something in my memory bank tells me it can be a sign of something very serious - probably my father and his blood cancer. Your reply has reassured me that I don't need to worry and as per one reply above I have since googled and yes, it appears to be a feature of PsA (along with fungal infections) and RA. I will try the daktarin and hope I can nip it in the bud. I've read that it can be quite stubborn?
Hi Brychni - I'm struggling to see the problem as all I can see are very nice nails! But you mention a possible fungal infection on the side of your big toe and I suddenly got black nails on both big toes a few months ago, which sounds similar to Dobcross1. Both nails came off and very slowly they're growing back. The podiatrist says it was due to trauma but having read all the shares below I now wonder.
