Magnesium and fatigue: Hi everyone quick question has... - NRAS
Magnesium and fatigue
I haven’t found anything that helps with fatigue. This my biggest problem. I do take magnesium for cramps.
I haven't found any remedy for fatigue. Sorry.
My fatigue has lessened now my RA is well controlled but it seems to be a constant feature of RA. I don’t take a magnesium supplement but I did start putting half a banana in my daily smoothie and that fruit is a good source.
Do you think your B12 level could be low because that can cause tiredness. It’s very common in vegans and sometimes vegetarians too.
As fatigue could be due to a few things, including disease activity, if it was me I’d have my levels checked before considering supplementing magnesium. As your Rheumy (nurse) is considering your starting biologics soon, I would say it's best not to rock the boat without proof of need.
I think you could ask your GP about this as fatigue might not be just down to the RA but low B12 and a blood test is a good idea to see if you need any additional supplements. Magnesium is not recommended for people with some medical conditions so better safe than sorry really.
Just wanted to add that if you haven't had your thyroid checked, that can be done with a blood test too. I'm hypothyroid which is not that uncommon and a major symptom is fatigue - easy to treat with a tablet a day with no side effects, and the difference for me was night and day. It can be caused by an autoimmune problem and sadly, as you no doubt know, if you have one autoimmune issue, it's not unusual to have another one. Maybe worth checking anyhow - and good luck!
Take every day for cramps as a banana was not cutting it but does nothing for fatigue for me!
