Con I take magnesium citrate while on methotrexate? I have almost constant night cramps & have read that this may help

I take magnesium citrate religiously, and sometimes other forms of magnesium, and am on MTX. As far as I know there are no contraindications but, as J1707 says, you could check with the nurse or the Gp. It can be very effective for a lot of people for night cramps, my partner certainly thinks so, amongst many other things, including sleep itself.

If you want to check on interactions, the best person to ask is a pharmacist I've always found. They can look it up if it's something they haven't come across before.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. This is a question that you need to ask your rheumatism doctor.

In general you must beware of all the pill pushers who want to sell as much of their stuff (even things that are totally unproven) as possible.

Hiya Gillian. The general advice with taking supplements alongside our meds is to first check before taking them with either your Rheumy or GP, whoever initiated the med(s) in question. A supplement may be ok to take with one med but not necessarily another, even though you're asking specifically re MTX. I know there's something about citrates which contradicts with MTX though I don't know for sure what it is without checking so please do ask to make sure.

NB just found this: Potassium Citrate Possible Harmful Interaction. Potassium citrate and other forms of citrate (e.g., calcium citrate, magnesium citrate) may be used to prevent kidney stones. These agents work by making the urine less acidic.

This effect on the urine may lead to decreased blood levels and therapeutic effects of methotrexate.

It may be advisable to avoid these citrate compounds during methotrexate therapy except under medical supervision. winchesterhospital.org/heal...

Thanks for taking the time to get this, really do appreciate it.So don’t think I will chance it,if I drink enough water during the day that seems to help,but then I’m up 4/5times for a loo visit! There are some things you just can’t win!😐thanks again 😘
