I take magnesium citrate religiously, and sometimes other forms of magnesium, and am on MTX. As far as I know there are no contraindications but, as J1707 says, you could check with the nurse or the Gp. It can be very effective for a lot of people for night cramps, my partner certainly thinks so, amongst many other things, including sleep itself.

If you want to check on interactions, the best person to ask is a pharmacist I've always found. They can look it up if it's something they haven't come across before.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer for you. This is a question that you need to ask your rheumatism doctor.

In general you must beware of all the pill pushers who want to sell as much of their stuff (even things that are totally unproven) as possible.

Here is a link to Mayo Clinic that talks about magnesium in general.

Hiya Gillian. The general advice with taking supplements alongside our meds is to first check before taking them with either your Rheumy or GP, whoever initiated the med(s) in question. A supplement may be ok to take with one med but not necessarily another, even though you're asking specifically re MTX. I know there's something about citrates which contradicts with MTX though I don't know for sure what it is without checking so please do ask to make sure.

NB just found this: Potassium Citrate Possible Harmful Interaction. Potassium citrate and other forms of citrate (e.g., calcium citrate, magnesium citrate) may be used to prevent kidney stones. These agents work by making the urine less acidic.

This effect on the urine may lead to decreased blood levels and therapeutic effects of methotrexate.

It may be advisable to avoid these citrate compounds during methotrexate therapy except under medical supervision. winchesterhospital.org/heal...
