I don’t think one is better than the other for RA, different things work for different people. I’ve been on both and they’ve both had the same effect although not long term.

They are both good and it’s down to trying them to see which suits you best.

I’ve just been on hydroxychloroquine for 10 days added to Sulphasalazine. My CRP is the highest I’ve ever had ( 144 ) so I really hope the combination does something because I feel Sulphasalazine has done nothing - I’ve been on that for 21 months. The awful flare I have now started about 4 days after my first ever flu jab.

I love sulfasalazine... really works for me alongside retuximab, whereas I didn’t notice any change when I took hydroxy... it just didn’t seem to do anything. But everyone is different! Try them and see..

I've recently added Sulfasalazine to Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquine and things are definitely improving so for me it's a combination.

Who knows everybody reacts differently to the drugs. You need to talk to your rheummy team and try something

Sulfasalazine worked quite well for me but had to stop due to side effects - that's not to say that you would get any as we all react differently. Good luck.

I've taken hydroxychloroquine for 4 years for seronegative RA and it took about 4 months to really kick in but am pain free and mobile as ever. I've even managed to halve my dose over the last six months. I'd say give it a go. Good luck.

Both worked for me for a period of time, I was on both plus methotrexate in combination. Your rheumy is best person to work out and to advise on the best drug or drug combination for you; individuals vary so much in what works for them and this disease varies considerably in severity and nature from person to person and this can change over time. It is a complex balance and often involves trial and error.

Hi Frankiefocus I’ve been on Hydroxychloroquine now for nearly 4 years! I have put on a lot of weight! I now have Dry eye syndrome, now the RA in the ankles,so the RA has still marched on even though I’m taking 400 mg daily. I’m really beginning to wonder if I should come off the medication but afraid of the consequences! But the weight isn’t helping the RA. Hope that you have better success.Regards wakeham

Hello, I have been on both for a fairly long time plus MTX for 25 years. Can’t tolerate biologics although have tried 3. I still have symptoms but without this combination I fear I might be a lot worse.
