Just wondering if anyone else suffers with very painful Achilles? The backs of my ankles have been so sore over the past couple of weeks. I’ve just started on leflunomide as MTX injections didn’t work. Also on numerous other meds.
I’ve got a phone consult with rheumy nurse in a couple of weeks so will ask her, but just wondered if anyone had any possible remedies or anything you did which helped.
Thanks 😊

Yes yes yes!!! And yes again . Oh my god it hurt even lying down .I’ve had Achilles pain which has effected my ability to walk , I limp and shuffle going up and down stairs can only be done sideways this has been going on for over 2 years. My disease did spiral out of control early last year eventually got it under control April this year all but my Achilles. Started physio last week and I see an improvement already but have been told I really won’t feel the benefits for 3 months. Don’t wait ring you nurse and they can get a quick referral. Mine did within 5 days. It would done by video call. I had my son hold the iPad so they could see me walk especially up and down stairs.
Yes ! All The Time! Drives me mad. Nothing that we have tried has eased it any over the years. I have psoriatic arthritis and seems it is one of the most affected tendons, only thing that helps my pain there is heat, I try to keep up with the physio stretches I got as they do help a little but nothing shakes my pain here. Sorry know that is not the answer you wanted to hear, agree with previous answer, don’t leave it call now, hopefully they can get it under control for you x
My ankles have always been painful had injections into them which helps for a while. It was one of the first symptoms that i had sorry i dont have any good news for you
May be best to contact rheumy nurse as Leflunomide can cause Achilles problems. Having said that I’ve been on Leflunomide for years, and when I mentioned Achilles pain to rheumatologist he was quite dismissive, and said what makes you think it isn’t the disease rather than the pills causing the problem. So continued with Leflunomide and have had Achilles pain off and on ever since.
It’s a difficult balance between easing one problem and causing another!
Yes on and off for years. Very painful so you have a lot of sympathy from me as a fellow sufferer. Tried physio but that made it worse. Makes finding shoes very difficult as they can set it off. Would love to wear sandals all year round. Rheumatologist says it is a common aspect of the disease.
Yes, my Rheumatologist told me it’s RA attacking them, goes for the bursa exactly where my pain and tenderness are.
It should reduce once RA is suppressed adequately but it does worry me a bit. Just be careful and ensure you have proper diagnosis/advice for your own situation. x
I’ve been on Leflunomide for a week after MTX oral and injections didn’t agree with me so I’m hoping it will settle down once this new drug starts to work.
It is sometimes a long haul till relief comes. Best of luck with LEF.
I sure have, had to see a physio at one bit. Does it hurt when you go on your tip toes?
I froze a teaspoon inside an ice cube tray and held the handle and rubbed the ice cube up and down the Achilles a few times a day. Took anti inflamms and kept mobile. Hopefully when your drugs kick in it will settle.
